Descriptive And Prescriptive Grammar
Introduction In this essay I will discuss the definition of the concept grammar in linguistic science
and thee attitude teachers may have towards such a conceptualization of what grammar is. I will
go into detail by explaining perspective and descriptive grammar. Descriptive Grammar The first
thing that I will be discussing is the definition of descriptive grammar. A descriptive grammar is a
set of rules about language based on how it is actually used. It can relate with a prescriptive
grammar, which is a set of rules based on how people think language should be used. Specialists in
descriptive grammar (linguists) examine the principles and patterns that underlie the use of words,
phrases, clauses, and sentences. In contrast, prescriptive...show more content...
Examples of prescriptive grammar rules can be found in practically every guide to "good"
language usage, grammar rule book, or grammar guide. Teacher's attitude towards grammar
Grammar has always been an important issue in second and foreign language learning and
teaching. Some hold the view that grammar is not essential for second/foreign language learning
and therefore have a 'zero position' regarding grammar teaching. On the other hand, some view
that grammar is necessary for second/foreign language learning. There is often confusion between
what is prescriptively correct under the rules of standard English grammar within different
varieties, which results in various options for classroom grammar teaching for second language
learners. In the classroom relating to descriptive grammar learners can be encouraged to move
away from a prescriptive approach to grammar by using a guided discovery in which they look for
examples of variations in use in authentic texts. These examples can be compared to prescriptive
rules in order to decide if they are useful or

Descriptive Essay On A Happy House
I am on the floor of my grandparents' small living room, looking through the sliding glass door
that leads to the backyard. With my legs crossed, I am sitting there, waiting for the sun to rise over
the mountain tree tops. It is early morning and I can hear the echo of the crows cawing through the
woods, but it is still too dark to see if any animals are lurking in the yard. I am young – so young
that sleeping in past dawn seems boring to me. This is where my mind wanders when I am in
need of some comfort. This is my happy place. My grandparents live deep in the forest, on a
mountain in Pennsylvania. They have lived there for over twenty years and it is difficult for me to
imagine them living anywhere else. Every year, either during summer break or during the holidays,
my family makes the ten hour drive up north to visit them. The drive never seems that long to me
because I am asleep most of the time, only waking up when we stop for gas or when one of us
needs to go to the bathroom. I always know we are near the end of the trip when the temperature
begins to drop and the chilly mountain air creeps through the windows of the car. When my
grandmother can hear the heavy rumble of our car easing up the gravel road that leads to her house,
she steps out on the porch and greets us. "How was the ride?" she asks with a grin on her face. "It
was alright," I say, as I stretch my legs and grab my bag. "Make sure you bring your snacks inside,"
she warns. "The bear will

Descriptive Essay About Music
I grab the white headphones and put the EarPods into my ears. Then, I go through a variety of
songs until my thumb lingers over the song "You Know Me" by a band named Thunder Dreamer.
Quickly, I click play and the world around me stops as the music enters my ears. The soft guitar
strums put an end to my over thinking and suppresses my feelings of sadness. By the time the vocals
appear in the song, I can only think about music and how happy I am in this moment. By this I mean
that hearing music is the equivalent of being at peace. To be more specific, music puts me in every
place I've ever felt happiness, tastes as sweet as it sounds and relaxes my overwhelming thoughts.
With this said, I am on top of the world when I have the headphones in my ears. I feel as though I
can do anything when I am blasting a song by Cage the Elephant on my speaker. Whether I am
listening through my headphones or on a speaker, the volume is always the highest it can be.
This way, the music penetrates through the walls and through every layer of skin on my body. I
know this high level of noise is not good for me, but the music is. Uniquely, music places me back
into every dream I've ever forgotten. I am suddenly placed into the dream where I'm a kid and I
am laughing as my friends try to catch me in a game of tag. In a matter of three beats, I am a child
again and I can only thank music for this. Moreover, when I hear Frank Sinatra's voice playing from
my "Classics" playlist, I am put back into the

There's no one to talk to... I hate this place. The smell, the silence, the way that time hangs in the
air catalyses my irritation. I scream yet no one hears. I question but no one answers. I'm just
waiting for the day I die and no one finds me. I guess I won't be there to enjoy that.
Chester, the cat, ambles his way through the hallway. I can hear the scratching of his paws on the
front of the mahogany door which stands imposingly like a body guard. The cold winter chill
swivels in the air, mocking and taunting me with its icy fangs. Night is approaching. I can sense
that it is going to be one of those nights where the clouds hang oppressively low, shrouding the
moon beneath their black drapes. However I know that every now and then she would emerge in
full beauty, casting light over this gothic castle. Chester continues to scratch at the door; his
behaviour has become increasingly agitated over the past few weeks. I guess I'm not the only one
here which the silence is driving increasingly insane.
The old earthen tiles tessellate in endless uniformity throughout the hallway in a black white
fashion. The chandeliers hang from the ceiling; each piece of glassware hangs like a dagger on
the piece of a fragile thread, waiting to fall on the unfortunate victim. As I stare at the swaying
knives, daring one to fall, sudden toll of a distant bell reverberates through the hallway, sending a
shockwave that ripples through me. I need to escape. These cold, lifeless tiles hurt me feet as I
begin to run with increasing frustration. My hands begin to clench, as my heart beats harder and
louder. All of a sudden however I stop. The golden handle of the front door stands ajar, tempting
me to open it to unlock the realms of the open world. However, just as I touch the knob, my hands
freeze in fear. What if I get caught? I'm not allowed to go outside in the dark. I don't want to get in
trouble. Biting on my nails as the sweat begins to drop from my face, I decide to leave.
Just as I leave Chester scurries his way through the marginally open door, following me with tireless
diligence. The warmth of the mud between my toes instantly pervades my spirit as I walk through
the lush green country side. The twilight sky sparkles,

Descriptive Essay On Dystopia
Dystopian Setting
The city that once had homed thousands and been the most economically successful country ever,
was now a contaminated wasteland. The land looked dry, destroyed and lonely. The morning
breeze felt like crying sorrows, and the grey deceitful sky awed down at us. In the deepest corner of
despair lies dystopia where hope dies. As someone looks through the eyes of the devil, they see his
utopia. Only visible by the dim light of the moon was the great wall. Beyond the wall? No one knew.
Stretching away from the wall was a humongous bridge that towered the wall. Standing tall on the
bridge was a tower, which had two circles that almost looked like eyes. Those mysterious, creepy
and dangerous looking eyes stared down at the city giving away a haunting look.
The reek of death hangs in the air throughout the land. Filling the mouths of those who lived in this
abandoned land was the taste of burnt garlic. The screams and cries of terror undistinguishable
between beast and human fill the ears of the last ones living. The sky, which was lit by the glow of
fires, is grey and empty. Decaying bodies and...show more content...
As I walked, the air of this haunted, dreadful and sorrowful land had sucked the life out of
everything and roared as humanity began to disappear. As I carried on walking, I noticed that the
small fraction of light was getting smaller and smaller, until it had been engulfed into a think
black ash like smoke. Aggressively, the wind walked past the building with its cruddy feeling,
blowing away all signs of life. Deeper and deeper into the land was a burning car door. The fire
roared and crackled. The roaring and crackling of the burning car door merged with the aggressive
air and created the loudest sounds ever heard on land. Growing darker, the skies made me feel
nauseous. The fear of not waking up if a human fell asleep towered

Descriptive Essay About A Hero
When talking about a hero, some people might think of a veteran, a fire fighter, or even
superman. The definition of the word "hero" varies between different people; however, my
definition of a hero is someone who is selfless, brave, and strong. Someone who doesn't runaway
when things get hard, who gives their all just for the wellbeing of others regardless of the strain it
puts on themselves. When thinking of the word "hero" the only person who comes to my mind
is my cousin Cassy. Cassy fits my own personal description of a hero; she is selfless, brave, and
strong. She doesn't run away when things get tough and most importantly, she looks out for
others no matter what the situation is. What is a hero to you? On September 24th of 2017, my
parents, along with my sister and I, walked into my grandma's house around three o'clock in the
afternoon. My aunt Patty had told us she had very important news for us to hear that evening. As
we sat down in the living room of my grandma's small condo, everybody looked at one another
awkwardly waiting for someone to speak first. My mom started the conversation by asking how
long my aunt was going to be in town. My aunt slightly teared up as she tried to spit out her
response. She began to tell us that she was actually moving back home to Fargo from the farm
place her and her boyfriend lived at near Devils Lake. My aunt started to stutter after a while and
then finally blurted out the sentence that nobody ever wants to hear come from a loved

Descriptive Essay About Myself
I find it extremely tough to talk about myself and my personal traits. In order for me to dIscuss
who I am in an accurate manner then I must provide some basic background information on
myself and talk about the Environment I grew up in. This way people can get a better
understanding of why I am the way I am. My Background is so essential In making me myself
because If I had been born under any different circumstances or grew up any differently I would be
a different person than I am today. I was born inAberdeen Scotland but raised in Fort Bend County
Texas. Aberdeen and Fort Bend both have great opportunities but differ in many ways. One way in

Her family communicates to one another using spanish or sometimes english. I have always
grown up in a family that speaks only english so I find it interesting to go over to other people's
houses and hear them communicating in another language. On top of all of this meeting different
people has also opened my mind to new ideas. For example, in school when we work in group
projects we collaborate and communicate with people who think differently than us then work
together to figure out whose ideas will work the best and how to improve them.
Another factor that plays a part in why I am shaped how I am is my family's economic
circumstances. I have always had access to anything I needed and for that I have extreme
gratitude because I know some people have a lot of difficulty in life. Since I was born into a
family with such good economic circumstances I have been lucky to have lots of opportunities.
One Opportunity I had as a child was participating in taekwondo. I did taekwondo until I reached a
blackbelt which took years of hardwork and dedication. I had to memorize forms, Spar with other
competitors and break boards in order to continue to move up to the next level. Taekwondo also
helped keep me in good shape and fit when I was younger. Another Opportunity I am grateful for is
the skill of playing the piano. At first I was not all that enthusiastic about playing it but my parents

It was a seemingly beautiful day as I drove on a joy ride in my bright blue sports car, with the
wind in my hair. This is an everyday activity for me. My friends would mock me saying, "You
spend more money on gas than you make working." I laughed to myself at the thought of jokes
amongst my friends. That happiness was soon halted. As I continued driving, I saw a car coming
rapidly around the curve. The car did not show any signs of slowing down as it headed towards the
intersection. The light turned yellow and then quickly red. Another object caught my eye that made
me fear what was going to happen next. A young couple started crossing the street wearing fancy
attire. The first thought that came to mind was, 'they are...show more content...
One of the police officers came up to me introduced himself, asked me my name and started, "Have
you ever seen this driver before? On the road or around town?" I quickly responded, "No, I have not
officer." He continued, "I learned from the call back to the station that the driver, David Chrisenger,
is considered the town drunk and does not currently have a valid license due to drinking and
driving". He asked me some questions and asked me to fill out an incident report. Still shaken up by
the whole incident I gladly accepted. The officer ended our conversation. "Thank you so much for
your time, Kevin. We really appreciate it."
The only thought running through my head on my way home was how much I had not
appreciated my wife and children. To witness something of that nature makes one conscientious
about what you have and how quickly it could vanish. I vowed after that day to speak out against
drinking and driving and the terrible outcomes that can transpire from something that some do
not view as a "big deal". It is apparent that better ways have to be found for getting drunk drivers off
the road. I encourage anyone to be responsible for their lives and others by agreeing to never drink
and drive again, and to also aid your family and friends in doing so. Have a designated driver each
night or call a cab. Everyone is capable of saving a

Descriptive Essay On Imagine A Cloud
Ever since I was young, I have had a passion for reading and writing. It is just something that has
always come easily to me. So when eleven–year–old me walked through the dimly lit hallways of
Johnsonville Elementary School, into a strange classroom, and sat in my boxed–in–desk and was
told that I was writing a descriptive essay, I was extremely excited. It would be the first time that I
had ever written a descriptive–based paper. Nevertheless, it was a newly–introduced challenge, and I
was ready to take it on. "Okay class", said the plump teacher standing in the front of the room, "I
have been informed that each of you needs to write an essay for the state." "I hope it is about
monsters and astronauts!", the student beside me said....show more content...
"I then sat down in my seat and felt the cotton–lined cushions. They were the softest things that I had
ever felt and I truly would never forget them", I added. I then continued, "However, my experience

thought, "What is it though?"
I went through every possible word before I finally found the word that I liked. "However, my
experience was interrupted by a screaming whistle. The train was getting ready to move and I
needed to prepare myself for it" "That sounds a lot better!", I said to myself. I kept writing. "I
then felt the train shift forwards and we started going. I looked out of the window and saw the
fluffy, Grey clouds of smoke rise above us." "Just like she told us." I wrote and smiled. "Not long
after, I heard three bold knocks on the door of the train car that I was in.", I wrote, "It was a man
wearing a nicely tailored suit asking if I wanted some sweets. Of course, I couldn't resist and took
them up in a heartbeat." I paused for a few moments, and continued "He ended up giving me some
chocolate cupcakes with the most delicious frosting that I have ever had." I started to lick my lips
from just thinking about it. "When I finished the last one, I looked out the window and saw the train
station. Just as quick as I had gotten on, the train arrived at its destination.", I concluded my paper
and read it over a thousand times. When I

Campus Descriptive Essay
West Virginia University has hands down the most gorgeous campus I have ever seen. Every
morning I would wake up knowing that I have the privilege of attending a good school with a
breathtakingly beautiful campus. I was gradually awoken by the warm rays of sunlight filtering
into my room like a gentle wake up call. I got up to look out the window and I saw my fellow
classmates walking to class and going about their days. Stretching and yawning I prepare myself for
the day. I cannot help but to think that today is going to be a good day. As I stepped outside for the
first time I felt the cool breeze gently blowing between the buildings, giving everyone it touches a
breath of fresh air. Strolling through campus, I stopped for a minute to admire how the sun was
shining down on like a spotlight on all the beautiful blue and gold flowers. The landscapers
worked hard planting the flowers of the most royal of blues and the perfect shade of golden
yellow. Walking further down the hill I saw the familiar "flying dub v" on every passing persons
clothing. Most of my classmates were in a rush to get to class, but I took my time just absorbing
my surroundings. A strong breeze carried the scent of freshly cut grass to my nose and embraced
me as I continued my journey to class. Passing several students on my way, nodding my head in
acknowledgement, a few familiar faces make eye contact and smile. The weather that day was
perfect, not too hot, but

Narrative vs. Descriptive Writing
A narrative essay uses a point of view to tell a story. It is an engaging way for an author to tell his
reader about an experience they have had or a personal story. Descriptive writing is a description of
something. It could be a person, place, thing, emotion or experience. The author is allowed more
artistic freedom when writing in descriptive form. While both descriptive and narrative essays are
similar in many ways, the descriptive essays use of language fully immerses the reader into the story
and allows the reader to feel the intended emotion. Descriptive writing is painting a vivid image.

It is very important for a narrative essay to follow a sequence of events. In the narrative essay This
Old House, the author followed a clear chronological order. Sedaris told a story that included all
of the typical components such as an introduction, and worked its way through all of the events,
introducing you to the characters and setting the stage along the way. Our book explains "As you
learned earlier, plot is the order, or sequence, of events that unfold in your story. It is crucial that
you organize these events so that, by the end of the story, they make sense to the reader and build
up to a crucial moment in the narrative. (Connell & Sole, 2013). Sedaris did an excellent job of
guiding the reader through the story. In contrast, descriptive writing does not necessarily follow a
timeline or story pattern. Descriptive style must use another form of organization. A descriptive
essay may for example separate paragraphs by the particular details being described. The author
may devote an entire paragraph to a sense, emotion or object. Amy Tan devoted one paragraph to
describe her angst and dismay "When I found out that my parents had invited the minister's family
over for Christmas Eve dinner, I cried. What would Robert think of our shabby Chinese Christmas?
What would he think of our noisy Chinese relatives who lacked proper American manners? What

Descriptive Essay About My Country
Nashville. When you hear the word Nashville, what pops up in your brain? You probably thing of
big city lights and country music. That's definitely not the Nashville I'm talking about. My
Nashville is a small town that has exactly four red lights and about 4,700 people in our city limits.
Everyone knows each other and it doesn't matter what you're doing or who you're with, give a day
and everybody knows what happened. It's the best and worst town to live, all in one. Nashville,
Georgia. I've had a lot of good and bad memories in my hometown. Everything that happens isn't too
serious or too exciting. Even though everybody knowing your business isn't exactly what most
people want, it has it up–sides. People in my community step up to the plate when it is the time to
do so. One example would be a hard–working old man that everyone loves, named Gary. Gary works
at one of the only decent gas stations in Nashville, trying to keep everyone he meets happy and to
make their day a little better. Recently Gary found out he has stomach cancer. Being that he works
at gas station, he really doesn't have the funds for medical bills. With Nashville being the tight
knit community it is, people have raised almost 5,000 dollars in less than 30 days. Knowing that
whatever happens in my life I have a whole town that has my back, is one reason Nashville is so
important to me. Imagine only having fun stuff to do on Friday nights. That's how it is in Nashville.
If it's not a Friday, you're

Descriptive Essay About Home
My definition for home cannot be described by words or by a simple thought, but home is rather
of a feeling. Home is the calmness and serenity that settles over me like a blanket on a cold snowy

where exactly that place was, and I didn't know that the answer was always right in front of me.
This feeling would come and go, and I would never recognize it because I knew that only the

Descriptive Essay About Animals
Animals are my favorite things in the world! Me and my family had an amazing trip to Wild

mom, my dad, my brothers Jackson and Gavin, and my cousins, Kyra and Lily. We went to wild
wonders on a hot and sunny day. The sky was clear baby blue, dotted with the occasional fluffy
white cloud. Wild Wonders is in Bonsall, California. I grew a lot from that trip, and I learned a
valuable lesson. In the beginning, I drive for quite a while. The wind is whipping my long blonde
hair around in my face, and my brown eyes are twinkling with excitement. I look out my window
at the constantly changing landscape. One minute I see a large grove of short and stubby avocado
trees growing off the side of a mountain, the next minute I see red brick houses and tall buildings
stretching on and on in the sea I call a city. "Wow, Wyatt, I'm so excited! I cannot wait to get there."
I hear my cousin's voice and I turn around and see her smiling face. She looks almost exactly like
me, but with way more freckles and she has a girl's facial structure. "Yeah. I'm also really excited,

I'm going to describe a girl for you, try to keep up. Long light brown hair, vintage classy glasses,
one lonely dimple on the lower part of her mouth, soft pale skin, stone cold stare, and a dry sense

can view me as unhappy or negative, but in all fairness who has a smile as their natural way of
expression. By all means, my personality, interests, and hobbies are the fundamental building blocks
to the life I choose to live.
Is it too cliche to say that I am a teenage girl with big insecurities, an addiction with comparing
myself to others, and deepening trust issues? Well if it is, then add being cliche to the list. I guess
you can say my insecurities originate from the fact that my biggest critic is my own mother. From

Crowds of people began to funnel in to this one location on the beach. I imagined that an animal

chair to follow the path of everyone else down the shoreline.
Upon reaching the scene, I became aware of what happened. I stared down at a little girl who was
lying face up and was unresponsive to family members calling her name. It was evident that she
had drowned and was on the edge of death. Life guards began to pound on her chest and start chest
compulsions. She continued to stay motionless. Quickly, lifeguards began the operations of CPR.
These long and tiring procedures made the lifeguards physically tired. The rest of the family

were told?" I heard behind me. The father screamed, "It was not my responsibility to do that, it was
yours!" The clear frustration began to build and caused more confusion.
The lifeguards circling around the little girl seemed frightened. Leaning closer to hear the rumors
being spread throughout the crowd, I unintentionally noticed the disturbing sound of gargling from
the little girl. She had regained consciousness, but could not breathe due to the water trapped in her
lungs. Policemen arrived on the beach and began to push back the imaginary boundaries

creativity. It should communicate with the viewers and help them imagine the concept of the
artwork. They should also qualify work that could be seen or physically felt, displaying their ideas to
be conveyed to the public. Imagery and symbolic meaning should be present with their art piece. In
addition, they must portray their creativity and imagination on a canvas or any work of art. In my
opinion, art is a representation of your thoughts and emotions portrayed to the audience in a
perceivable and communicative manner, helping the audience connect with the artwork.
The creativity of paintings helps the viewer understand the artist's emotions, as well as their art piece.
Pablo Picasso, one of the greatest painters of the twentieth century, helped me understand more
about art, as well as his point of view of his own style or method to display his emotions onto a
canvas. I learned that Picasso was the creator of modern arts through his imaginative and innovative
ideas found in

Descriptive Essay On A Computer
I've always loved using computers. Ever since I was 6 years old I could never stop using them
when I got the chance, and this remains true till today. I admit the things that I would do on a
computer weren't exactly productive. I would watch a lot of cartoons and play games. My
parents weren't as enthusiastic about it as I was. They would always tell me to go do something
like read a book or go outside. I almost never follow through with their requests and so I got
grounded often. But to me it was worth it. My parents gave up trying to get me off the computer,
which is why I'm the computer addicted person I am today. When I turned 14 I became a lot
more productive when it came to using a computer. I didn't play educational games or grind on
"Khan Academy" for endless hours. Instead I learned programming languages and created some
things that I was proud of. I've created a website that makes calls to a server in which I post and
request data, a game called "Anvil Dropper", and most recently, an artificially intelligent duck that
helps keep track of who is coming in and out of a facility. All of this sounds like a lot of work but
to me personally, I never saw it as work. It was just simply fun. If you don't know already, sitting
down and being on a computer for about ten hours a day can make you feel really unhealthy. I
noticed that I couldn't do any more than 5 push–ups without taking a break, and just from that I
assumed I was going to die if I didn't get my butt off of

  • 1. Descriptive And Prescriptive Grammar Introduction In this essay I will discuss the definition of the concept grammar in linguistic science and thee attitude teachers may have towards such a conceptualization of what grammar is. I will go into detail by explaining perspective and descriptive grammar. Descriptive Grammar The first thing that I will be discussing is the definition of descriptive grammar. A descriptive grammar is a set of rules about language based on how it is actually used. It can relate with a prescriptive grammar, which is a set of rules based on how people think language should be used. Specialists in descriptive grammar (linguists) examine the principles and patterns that underlie the use of words, phrases, clauses, and sentences. In contrast, prescriptive...show more content... Examples of prescriptive grammar rules can be found in practically every guide to "good" language usage, grammar rule book, or grammar guide. Teacher's attitude towards grammar Grammar has always been an important issue in second and foreign language learning and teaching. Some hold the view that grammar is not essential for second/foreign language learning and therefore have a 'zero position' regarding grammar teaching. On the other hand, some view that grammar is necessary for second/foreign language learning. There is often confusion between what is prescriptively correct under the rules of standard English grammar within different varieties, which results in various options for classroom grammar teaching for second language learners. In the classroom relating to descriptive grammar learners can be encouraged to move away from a prescriptive approach to grammar by using a guided discovery in which they look for examples of variations in use in authentic texts. These examples can be compared to prescriptive rules in order to decide if they are useful or Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 3. Descriptive Essay On A Happy House I am on the floor of my grandparents' small living room, looking through the sliding glass door that leads to the backyard. With my legs crossed, I am sitting there, waiting for the sun to rise over the mountain tree tops. It is early morning and I can hear the echo of the crows cawing through the woods, but it is still too dark to see if any animals are lurking in the yard. I am young – so young that sleeping in past dawn seems boring to me. This is where my mind wanders when I am in need of some comfort. This is my happy place. My grandparents live deep in the forest, on a mountain in Pennsylvania. They have lived there for over twenty years and it is difficult for me to imagine them living anywhere else. Every year, either during summer break or during the holidays, my family makes the ten hour drive up north to visit them. The drive never seems that long to me because I am asleep most of the time, only waking up when we stop for gas or when one of us needs to go to the bathroom. I always know we are near the end of the trip when the temperature begins to drop and the chilly mountain air creeps through the windows of the car. When my grandmother can hear the heavy rumble of our car easing up the gravel road that leads to her house, she steps out on the porch and greets us. "How was the ride?" she asks with a grin on her face. "It was alright," I say, as I stretch my legs and grab my bag. "Make sure you bring your snacks inside," she warns. "The bear will Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Descriptive Essay About Music I grab the white headphones and put the EarPods into my ears. Then, I go through a variety of songs until my thumb lingers over the song "You Know Me" by a band named Thunder Dreamer. Quickly, I click play and the world around me stops as the music enters my ears. The soft guitar strums put an end to my over thinking and suppresses my feelings of sadness. By the time the vocals appear in the song, I can only think about music and how happy I am in this moment. By this I mean that hearing music is the equivalent of being at peace. To be more specific, music puts me in every place I've ever felt happiness, tastes as sweet as it sounds and relaxes my overwhelming thoughts. With this said, I am on top of the world when I have the headphones in my ears. I feel as though I can do anything when I am blasting a song by Cage the Elephant on my speaker. Whether I am listening through my headphones or on a speaker, the volume is always the highest it can be. This way, the music penetrates through the walls and through every layer of skin on my body. I know this high level of noise is not good for me, but the music is. Uniquely, music places me back into every dream I've ever forgotten. I am suddenly placed into the dream where I'm a kid and I am laughing as my friends try to catch me in a game of tag. In a matter of three beats, I am a child again and I can only thank music for this. Moreover, when I hear Frank Sinatra's voice playing from my "Classics" playlist, I am put back into the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Descriptive Essay There's no one to talk to... I hate this place. The smell, the silence, the way that time hangs in the air catalyses my irritation. I scream yet no one hears. I question but no one answers. I'm just waiting for the day I die and no one finds me. I guess I won't be there to enjoy that. Chester, the cat, ambles his way through the hallway. I can hear the scratching of his paws on the front of the mahogany door which stands imposingly like a body guard. The cold winter chill swivels in the air, mocking and taunting me with its icy fangs. Night is approaching. I can sense that it is going to be one of those nights where the clouds hang oppressively low, shrouding the moon beneath their black drapes. However I know that every now and then she would emerge in full beauty, casting light over this gothic castle. Chester continues to scratch at the door; his behaviour has become increasingly agitated over the past few weeks. I guess I'm not the only one here which the silence is driving increasingly insane. The old earthen tiles tessellate in endless uniformity throughout the hallway in a black white fashion. The chandeliers hang from the ceiling; each piece of glassware hangs like a dagger on the piece of a fragile thread, waiting to fall on the unfortunate victim. As I stare at the swaying knives, daring one to fall, sudden toll of a distant bell reverberates through the hallway, sending a shockwave that ripples through me. I need to escape. These cold, lifeless tiles hurt me feet as I begin to run with increasing frustration. My hands begin to clench, as my heart beats harder and louder. All of a sudden however I stop. The golden handle of the front door stands ajar, tempting me to open it to unlock the realms of the open world. However, just as I touch the knob, my hands freeze in fear. What if I get caught? I'm not allowed to go outside in the dark. I don't want to get in trouble. Biting on my nails as the sweat begins to drop from my face, I decide to leave. Just as I leave Chester scurries his way through the marginally open door, following me with tireless diligence. The warmth of the mud between my toes instantly pervades my spirit as I walk through the lush green country side. The twilight sky sparkles, Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Descriptive Essay On Dystopia Dystopian Setting The city that once had homed thousands and been the most economically successful country ever, was now a contaminated wasteland. The land looked dry, destroyed and lonely. The morning breeze felt like crying sorrows, and the grey deceitful sky awed down at us. In the deepest corner of despair lies dystopia where hope dies. As someone looks through the eyes of the devil, they see his utopia. Only visible by the dim light of the moon was the great wall. Beyond the wall? No one knew. Stretching away from the wall was a humongous bridge that towered the wall. Standing tall on the bridge was a tower, which had two circles that almost looked like eyes. Those mysterious, creepy and dangerous looking eyes stared down at the city giving away a haunting look. The reek of death hangs in the air throughout the land. Filling the mouths of those who lived in this abandoned land was the taste of burnt garlic. The screams and cries of terror undistinguishable between beast and human fill the ears of the last ones living. The sky, which was lit by the glow of fires, is grey and empty. Decaying bodies and...show more content... As I walked, the air of this haunted, dreadful and sorrowful land had sucked the life out of everything and roared as humanity began to disappear. As I carried on walking, I noticed that the small fraction of light was getting smaller and smaller, until it had been engulfed into a think black ash like smoke. Aggressively, the wind walked past the building with its cruddy feeling, blowing away all signs of life. Deeper and deeper into the land was a burning car door. The fire roared and crackled. The roaring and crackling of the burning car door merged with the aggressive air and created the loudest sounds ever heard on land. Growing darker, the skies made me feel nauseous. The fear of not waking up if a human fell asleep towered Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Descriptive Essay About A Hero When talking about a hero, some people might think of a veteran, a fire fighter, or even superman. The definition of the word "hero" varies between different people; however, my definition of a hero is someone who is selfless, brave, and strong. Someone who doesn't runaway when things get hard, who gives their all just for the wellbeing of others regardless of the strain it puts on themselves. When thinking of the word "hero" the only person who comes to my mind is my cousin Cassy. Cassy fits my own personal description of a hero; she is selfless, brave, and strong. She doesn't run away when things get tough and most importantly, she looks out for others no matter what the situation is. What is a hero to you? On September 24th of 2017, my parents, along with my sister and I, walked into my grandma's house around three o'clock in the afternoon. My aunt Patty had told us she had very important news for us to hear that evening. As we sat down in the living room of my grandma's small condo, everybody looked at one another awkwardly waiting for someone to speak first. My mom started the conversation by asking how long my aunt was going to be in town. My aunt slightly teared up as she tried to spit out her response. She began to tell us that she was actually moving back home to Fargo from the farm place her and her boyfriend lived at near Devils Lake. My aunt started to stutter after a while and then finally blurted out the sentence that nobody ever wants to hear come from a loved Get more content on HelpWriting.net

In order for me to dIscuss who I am in an accurate manner then I must provide some basic background information on myself and talk about the Environment I grew up in. This way people can get a better understanding of why I am the way I am. My Background is so essential In making me myself because If I had been born under any different circumstances or grew up any differently I would be a different person than I am today. I have always grown up in a family that speaks only english so I find it interesting to go over to other people's houses and hear them communicating in another language. On top of all of this meeting different people has also opened my mind to new ideas. For example, in school when we work in group projects we collaborate and communicate with people who think differently than us then work together to figure out whose ideas will work the best and how to improve them. Another factor that plays a part in why I am shaped how I am is my family's economic circumstances. I have always had access to anything I needed and for that I have extreme gratitude because I know some people have a lot of difficulty in life. Since I was born into a family with such good economic circumstances I have been lucky to have lots of opportunities. One Opportunity I had as a child was participating in taekwondo. I did taekwondo until I reached a blackbelt which took years of hardwork and dedication. I had to memorize forms, Spar with other competitors and break boards in order to continue to move up to the next level. Taekwondo also helped keep me in good shape and fit when I was younger. Another Opportunity I am grateful for is the skill of playing the piano. • 9. Descriptive Essay Descriptive Essay It was a seemingly beautiful day as I drove on a joy ride in my bright blue sports car, with the wind in my hair. This is an everyday activity for me. My friends would mock me saying, "You spend more money on gas than you make working." I laughed to myself at the thought of jokes amongst my friends. That happiness was soon halted. As I continued driving, I saw a car coming rapidly around the curve. The car did not show any signs of slowing down as it headed towards the intersection. The light turned yellow and then quickly red. Another object caught my eye that made me fear what was going to happen next. A young couple started crossing the street wearing fancy attire. The first thought that came to mind was, 'they are...show more content... One of the police officers came up to me introduced himself, asked me my name and started, "Have you ever seen this driver before? On the road or around town?" I quickly responded, "No, I have not officer." He continued, "I learned from the call back to the station that the driver, David Chrisenger, is considered the town drunk and does not currently have a valid license due to drinking and driving". He asked me some questions and asked me to fill out an incident report. Still shaken up by the whole incident I gladly accepted. The officer ended our conversation. "Thank you so much for your time, Kevin. We really appreciate it." The only thought running through my head on my way home was how much I had not appreciated my wife and children. To witness something of that nature makes one conscientious about what you have and how quickly it could vanish. I vowed after that day to speak out against drinking and driving and the terrible outcomes that can transpire from something that some do not view as a "big deal". It is apparent that better ways have to be found for getting drunk drivers off the road. I encourage anyone to be responsible for their lives and others by agreeing to never drink and drive again, and to also aid your family and friends in doing so. Have a designated driver each night or call a cab. Everyone is capable of saving a Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 10. Descriptive Essay On Imagine A Cloud Ever since I was young, I have had a passion for reading and writing. It is just something that has always come easily to me. So when eleven–year–old me walked through the dimly lit hallways of Johnsonville Elementary School, into a strange classroom, and sat in my boxed–in–desk and was told that I was writing a descriptive essay, I was extremely excited. It would be the first time that I had ever written a descriptive–based paper. Nevertheless, it was a newly–introduced challenge, and I was ready to take it on. "Okay class", said the plump teacher standing in the front of the room, "I have been informed that each of you needs to write an essay for the state." "I hope it is about monsters and astronauts!", the student beside me said....show more content... "I then sat down in my seat and felt the cotton–lined cushions. "There must be a better word than loud.", I thought, "What is it though?" I went through every possible word before I finally found the word that I liked. "However, my experience was interrupted by a screaming whistle. The train was getting ready to move and I needed to prepare myself for it" "That sounds a lot better!", I said to myself. I kept writing. "I then felt the train shift forwards and we started going. I looked out of the window and saw the fluffy, Grey clouds of smoke rise above us." "Just like she told us." I wrote and smiled. "Not long after, I heard three bold knocks on the door of the train car that I was in.", I wrote, "It was a man wearing a nicely tailored suit asking if I wanted some sweets. Of course, I couldn't resist and took them up in a heartbeat." I paused for a few moments, and continued "He ended up giving me some chocolate cupcakes with the most delicious frosting that I have ever had." I started to lick my lips from just thinking about it. "When I finished the last one, I looked out the window and saw the train station. Just as quick as I had gotten on, the train arrived at its destination.", I concluded my paper and read it over a thousand times. When I Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 11. Campus Descriptive Essay West Virginia University has hands down the most gorgeous campus I have ever seen. Every morning I would wake up knowing that I have the privilege of attending a good school with a breathtakingly beautiful campus. I was gradually awoken by the warm rays of sunlight filtering into my room like a gentle wake up call. I got up to look out the window and I saw my fellow classmates walking to class and going about their days. Stretching and yawning I prepare myself for the day. I cannot help but to think that today is going to be a good day. As I stepped outside for the first time I felt the cool breeze gently blowing between the buildings, giving everyone it touches a breath of fresh air. Strolling through campus, I stopped for a minute to admire how the sun was shining down on like a spotlight on all the beautiful blue and gold flowers. The landscapers worked hard planting the flowers of the most royal of blues and the perfect shade of golden yellow. Walking further down the hill I saw the familiar "flying dub v" on every passing persons clothing. Most of my classmates were in a rush to get to class, but I took my time just absorbing my surroundings. A strong breeze carried the scent of freshly cut grass to my nose and embraced me as I continued my journey to class. • 12. Narrative vs. Descriptive Writing A narrative essay uses a point of view to tell a story. It is an engaging way for an author to tell his reader about an experience they have had or a personal story. Descriptive writing is a description of something. It could be a person, place, thing, emotion or experience. The author is allowed more artistic freedom when writing in descriptive form. While both descriptive and narrative essays are similar in many ways, the descriptive essays use of language fully immerses the reader into the story and allows the reader to feel the intended emotion. Descriptive writing is painting a vivid image. When reading I want to be able to lose myself in the writing doesn't everyone? Both narrative and descriptive writing include...show more content... It is very important for a narrative essay to follow a sequence of events. In the narrative essay This Old House, the author followed a clear chronological order. Sedaris told a story that included all of the typical components such as an introduction, and worked its way through all of the events, introducing you to the characters and setting the stage along the way. Our book explains "As you learned earlier, plot is the order, or sequence, of events that unfold in your story. It is crucial that you organize these events so that, by the end of the story, they make sense to the reader and build up to a crucial moment in the narrative. (Connell & Sole, 2013). Sedaris did an excellent job of guiding the reader through the story. In contrast, descriptive writing does not necessarily follow a timeline or story pattern. Descriptive style must use another form of organization. A descriptive essay may for example separate paragraphs by the particular details being described. The author may devote an entire paragraph to a sense, emotion or object. Amy Tan devoted one paragraph to describe her angst and dismay "When I found out that my parents had invited the minister's family over for Christmas Eve dinner, I cried. What would Robert think of our shabby Chinese Christmas? What would he think of our noisy Chinese relatives who lacked proper American manners? • 13. Descriptive Essay About My Country Nashville. When you hear the word Nashville, what pops up in your brain? You probably thing of big city lights and country music. That's definitely not the Nashville I'm talking about. My Nashville is a small town that has exactly four red lights and about 4,700 people in our city limits. Everyone knows each other and it doesn't matter what you're doing or who you're with, give a day and everybody knows what happened. It's the best and worst town to live, all in one. Nashville, Georgia. I've had a lot of good and bad memories in my hometown. Everything that happens isn't too serious or too exciting. Even though everybody knowing your business isn't exactly what most people want, it has it up–sides. People in my community step up to the plate when it is the time to do so. One example would be a hard–working old man that everyone loves, named Gary. Gary works at one of the only decent gas stations in Nashville, trying to keep everyone he meets happy and to make their day a little better. Recently Gary found out he has stomach cancer. Being that he works at gas station, he really doesn't have the funds for medical bills. With Nashville being the tight knit community it is, people have raised almost 5,000 dollars in less than 30 days. Knowing that whatever happens in my life I have a whole town that has my back, is one reason Nashville is so important to me. Imagine only having fun stuff to do on Friday nights. That's how it is in Nashville. If it's not a Friday, you're Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 15. Descriptive Essay About Home My definition for home cannot be described by words or by a simple thought, but home is rather of a feeling. Home is the calmness and serenity that settles over me like a blanket on a cold snowy night, just a silent assurance telling me I belong there. It took me quite a bit of time to understand where exactly that place was, and I didn't know that the answer was always right in front of me. This feeling would come and go, and I would never recognize it because I knew that only the house I lived in was my home. I never realized that the place I lived was not my home, that home was in fact more than what the words in the dictionary say. When I was younger, I lived in the Philippines, my backyard were the rice fields and I would...show more content... During lunch, my grandma and mother would cook in the kitchen and set up the food in the big picnic basket to later share with everyone. We would walk along to thefield and my job was to carry the cold water jug. As we reached the field, all the farmers would smile and greet us, and some would even admire me for being such a helper. At lunchtime, I sat there along with all those workers, eating with them and listening. Their conversations mostly consists of the weather and how they could improve the rice farm. Often, I would make a comment saying, "Don't worry, I will help", and they loved me. I was the farm's little helper–––this was my home. There was a tiny pond with a small bridge in beside our old house. The water was so clear that you could see your reflection, just like a mirror. The summer was the fishing season; I was on a mission. I had my bright–pink, half gallon bucket in one hand and a little piece of mosquito net on the other. I wore my shorts and my favourite T–shirt, with my long hair tied back, a true fisher look, I thought. I put my biggest toe in first to check the temperature of the water, but I always ended up soaking myself all the way, up to my head trying to catch the fish –– now that's working hard! My friends and I filled that bright–pink bucket full and our hearts were filled with the sense of Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 16. Descriptive Essay About Animals Animals are my favorite things in the world! Me and my family had an amazing trip to Wild Wonders, where I saw and pet so many adorable animals that live there. My family includes my mom, my dad, my brothers Jackson and Gavin, and my cousins, Kyra and Lily. We went to wild wonders on a hot and sunny day. The sky was clear baby blue, dotted with the occasional fluffy white cloud. Wild Wonders is in Bonsall, California. I grew a lot from that trip, and I learned a valuable lesson. In the beginning, I drive for quite a while. The wind is whipping my long blonde hair around in my face, and my brown eyes are twinkling with excitement. I look out my window at the constantly changing landscape. One minute I see a large grove of short and stubby avocado trees growing off the side of a mountain, the next minute I see red brick houses and tall buildings stretching on and on in the sea I call a city. "Wow, Wyatt, I'm so excited! I cannot wait to get there." I hear my cousin's voice and I turn around and see her smiling face. She looks almost exactly like me, but with way more freckles and she has a girl's facial structure. "Yeah. I'm also really excited, Lily," I agree. "I can't believe we waited for so long and it's finally here." While me and Lily talk about what animals we think are going to be there, Jackson, Gavin, and Kyra all play the cheesy car games "Would You Rather" and "Truth or Dare" and "I Spy". Lily is 10, I'm 11, Jackson and Kyra are 13 and 14, and Gavins 15. We Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 17. Descriptive Essay I'm going to describe a girl for you, try to keep up. Long light brown hair, vintage classy glasses, one lonely dimple on the lower part of her mouth, soft pale skin, stone cold stare, and a dry sense of humor. Can you picture her? Well if you can, then you've basically just met me. I usually try to force a smile, wait no scratch that– I used to try to force a smile. Now I'm not saying this so that you can view me as unhappy or negative, but in all fairness who has a smile as their natural way of expression. By all means, my personality, interests, and hobbies are the fundamental building blocks to the life I choose to live. Is it too cliche to say that I am a teenage girl with big insecurities, an addiction with comparing myself to others, and deepening trust issues? Well if it is, then add being cliche to the list. I guess you can say my insecurities originate from the fact that my biggest critic is my own mother. From the earliest years of elementary up till this present day, it was either my wardrobe, my posture, or my way of speaking that gained the attention of my mother's judgmental eye. Eventually, the criticism started to slip out of my own mouth, and that's when I began to compare myself to others. I'm not oblivious to how unhealthy this makes me, but when I am told that I need to be better (basically my entire life), it's easy to fall into unhealthy habits. Speaking of unhealthy habits, having trust issues seems to be my main one. As I grew older and entered the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 18. Descriptive Essay About Vacation Max Mudger Mrs. Oncu DE 11 30 October 2017 Narrative Essay The air was filled with salt and warm sunlight. The waves were crashing against the Hawaiian sand causing a beautiful and relaxing sound. With flapping wings and squawking noises, seagulls were stalking tourists in the search of food. The soft, hot sand was soothing to the touch. The palm trees danced in the swaying wind and the aroma of distant barbecues and sunscreen wafted in the air. As a native Floridian, the thought of a Hawaiian vacation was appealing. Hours of waiting began to accumulate when I was informed that my flight to Hawaii had been rescheduled. My frustration built as I sat and anticipated the start to my vacation. After the airplane trip to the islands, I...show more content... Crowds of people began to funnel in to this one location on the beach. I imagined that an animal had washed up on the shore and could not get back into the water. My curiosity grew, and I left my chair to follow the path of everyone else down the shoreline. Upon reaching the scene, I became aware of what happened. I stared down at a little girl who was lying face up and was unresponsive to family members calling her name. It was evident that she had drowned and was on the edge of death. Life guards began to pound on her chest and start chest compulsions. She continued to stay motionless. Quickly, lifeguards began the operations of CPR. These long and tiring procedures made the lifeguards physically tired. The rest of the family bickered back and forth on whose fault this was. "Why couldn't you just watch her and do what you were told?" I heard behind me. The father screamed, "It was not my responsibility to do that, it was yours!" The clear frustration began to build and caused more confusion. The lifeguards circling around the little girl seemed frightened. Leaning closer to hear the rumors being spread throughout the crowd, I unintentionally noticed the disturbing sound of gargling from the little girl. She had regained consciousness, but could not breathe due to the water trapped in her lungs. Policemen arrived on the beach and began to push back the imaginary boundaries surrounding the circle of lifeguards. The police advised everyone to leave the beach Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 20. Descriptive Essay On A Computer I've always loved using computers. Ever since I was 6 years old I could never stop using them when I got the chance, and this remains true till today. I admit the things that I would do on a computer weren't exactly productive. I would watch a lot of cartoons and play games. My parents weren't as enthusiastic about it as I was. They would always tell me to go do something like read a book or go outside. I almost never follow through with their requests and so I got grounded often. But to me it was worth it. My parents gave up trying to get me off the computer, which is why I'm the computer addicted person I am today. When I turned 14 I became a lot more productive when it came to using a computer. I didn't play educational games or grind on "Khan Academy" for endless hours. Instead I learned programming languages and created some things that I was proud of. I've created a website that makes calls to a server in which I post and request data, a game called "Anvil Dropper", and most recently, an artificially intelligent duck that helps keep track of who is coming in and out of a facility. All of this sounds like a lot of work but to me personally, I never saw it as work. It was just simply fun. If you don't know already, sitting down and being on a computer for about ten hours a day can make you feel really unhealthy. I noticed that I couldn't do any more than 5 push–ups without taking a break, and just from that I assumed I was going to die if I didn't get my butt off of Get more content on HelpWriting.net
