What is Emotional Intelligence?
What kind of personal competences are
required to effectively and successfully use EI
in a business context and in life in general?
Emotional Intelligence :
Definitions
Emotional Intelligence is defined as a learned capability
that results in outstanding performance.
An "emotionally intelligent" person is able to know and to control
the emotions of themselves, of other people and of entire groups
of people . Sometimes the term confuses people as they may
think that emotional intelligence is about emoting and being very
"feelings" oriented. This is far from the truth.
Emotional intelligence can be a powerful skill, enabling
people to transform negative, stressful feelings. In doing so, the
individual is able to think more clearly in-the-moment, focus on
the task at hand and be more efficient and productive.
The personal competences which are required to
effectively and successfully use Emotional
Intelligence in a business context and in life in
general are :
1. Self-awareness: It is the ability to focus attention on your
own emotional state in any situation, and being able to
effectively process this state and use what you know to better
inform your future actions. Say you are angry. A self-aware
person will not only know they are angry, but the cause of the
anger, and will use this knowledge to decide his or her next
step.
2. Emotional awareness: Recognizing one’s emotions and their
effects. People with this competence know which emotions
they are feeling and why do they feel so. They realize the links
between their feelings and what they think , do, and say. They
also recognize how their feelings affect their performance and
they have a guiding awareness of their values and goals.
3. Accurate Self-Assessment: Knowing one’s strengths and limits.
People with this competence are aware of their strengths and
weaknesses. They are reflective, learning from experience, open to
candid feedback, new perspectives, continuous learning, and self-
development and they are able to show a sense of humor and
perspective about themselves.
4. Self Confidence: Sureness about one’s self-worth an capabilities.
People with this competence areresent themselves with self-assurance.
They can voice views that are unpopular and go out on a limb for what
is right and they are decisive, able to make sound decisions despite
uncertainties and pressures.
5. Self-Regulation : Self-regulation allows you to select the particular
emotion you wish to experience at a given moment, in a particular
situation. This process takes a lot of practice and a considerable amount
of self-control, but mastering it will allow you to take ownership of
your emotions, and free you from being anyone else's emotional victim
because you and you along will manage your emotional reaction.
It needs to be noted, however, that self-regulation is more than
merely "stuffing" or ignoring negative emotions. It is an active
process that takes considerable training and focus to accomplish.
6. Self Control : Managing disruptive emotions and impulses.
People with this competence manage their impulsive feelings and
distressing emotions well, stay composed, positive, and unflappable
even in trying moment and they can think clearly and stay focused
though they are under pressure.
7.Trustworthiness: Maintaining standards of honesty and integrity.
People with this competence can act ethically and are above reproach
build trust through their reliability and authenticity,admit their own
mistakes and confront unethical actions in others and they take
tough, principled stands even if they are unpopular.
8.Conscientiousness: Taking responsibility for personal performance.
People with this competence meet commitments and keep promises,
hold themselves accountable for meeting their objectives. They are
also organized and careful in their work.
9. Adaptability : Flexibility in handling change. People with this
competence are smoothly handle multiple demands, shifting priorities,
and rapid change, adapt their responses and tactics to fit fluid
circumstances. They are also flexible in how they see events.
10.Innovativeness: Being comfortable with and open to novel ideas
and new information. People with this competence seek out fresh ideas
from a wide variety of sources, entertain original solutions to problem,
generate new ideas and take fresh perspectives and risks in their
thinking.
11. Self-Motivation : This competence allows you to use your
emotions to affect positive change in your life through dedicated
pursuit of your goals, no matter the obstacles in your way. This process
requires you to employ your emotions toward near-complete positivity,
optimism, confidence and persistence. It is essential that you release
the negative emotional reactions to achieve self-motivation.
12. Achievement Drive : Striving to improve or meet a standard of
excellence. People with this competence are results-oriented, with a high
drive to meet their objectives and standards, set challenging goals and
take calculated risks. They pursue information to reduce uncertainty and
find ways to do better. They learn how to improve their performance too.
13. Commitment : Aligning with the goals of the group or organization.
People with this competence are readily make personal or group
sacrifices to meet a larger organizational goal, find a sense of purpose in
the larger mission,use the group’s core values in making decisions and
clarifying choices and actively seek out opportunities to fulfill the
group’s mission.
14. Initiative : Readiness to act on opportunities. People with this
competence are ready to seize opportunities, pursue goals beyond what’s
required or expected of them, cut through red tape and bend the rules
when necessary to get the job done and mobilize others through unusual,
enterprising efforts.
15. Optimism : Persistence in pursuing goals despite obstacles
and setbacks. People with this competence are persist in seeking
goals despite obstacles and setbacks. They operate from hope of
success rather than fear of failure and they see setbacks as due to
manageable circumstance rather than a personal flaw

The emotional competencies are those
that enable us to put the IQ that we have
and the professional (technical) skills that
we have effectively and successfully into
use in a business context and in life in
general. Given this scenario, describe the
following terms and what it means to
you:
 Emotional Self-Awareness
 Accurate Self-Assessment
 Self-Confidence
1. Emotional Self-Awareness: recognizing how our
emotions affect our performance. It is the ability
to recognize one’s emotions and their effects. It is
the ability to effectively read how we react to cues
in the environment and be aware of how one’s
emotions affect performance.
Having this competence, I surely know which
emotions I’m feeling of and why do I feel so. I
would be able to realize the links between my
feelings and what I think, do, and say. I also could
recognize how my feelings affect my
performance. I will have a guiding awareness of
the values and goals I want to achieve.
2. Accurate Self-Assessment: knowing one’s
own inner resources, abilities and limits. It is
being aware of one’s strengths and limitations. It
is based on the desire to receive feedback and
new perspectives about oneself and to be
motivated by continuous learning and self-
development. It implies having the ability to
target areas for change.
Having this competence, I will always aware of
my strengths and weaknesses, I’ll be reflective,
learning from experience, open to candid
feedback, new perspectives, continuous learning,
and self-development and I will be able to show a
sense of humor and perspective about myself.
3. Self-Confidence: a strong sense of one’s self-
worth and capabilities . It is a belief in one’s own
capability to accomplish a task and select an
effective approach to a task or problem. This
includes confidence in one’s ability as expressed in
increasingly challenging circumstances and
confidence in one’s decisions or opinion.
Having this competence, I will be able to
present myself with self-assurance, I can voice
views that are unpopular and go out on a limb for
what is right. I will also decisive and able to make
sound decisions despite uncertainties and pressures.

  • 1. Rafidah binti Saman . 811593. Qn.8 & Qn 35. Question 8. What is Emotional Intelligence? What kind of personal competences are required to effectively and successfully use EI in a business context and in life in general?
  • 2. Emotional Intelligence : Definitions Emotional Intelligence is defined as a learned capability that results in outstanding performance. An "emotionally intelligent" person is able to know and to control the emotions of themselves, of other people and of entire groups of people . Sometimes the term confuses people as they may think that emotional intelligence is about emoting and being very "feelings" oriented. This is far from the truth. Emotional intelligence can be a powerful skill, enabling people to transform negative, stressful feelings. In doing so, the individual is able to think more clearly in-the-moment, focus on the task at hand and be more efficient and productive.
  • 3. The personal competences which are required to effectively and successfully use Emotional Intelligence in a business context and in life in general are : 1. Self-awareness: It is the ability to focus attention on your own emotional state in any situation, and being able to effectively process this state and use what you know to better inform your future actions. Say you are angry. A self-aware person will not only know they are angry, but the cause of the anger, and will use this knowledge to decide his or her next step. 2. Emotional awareness: Recognizing one’s emotions and their effects. People with this competence know which emotions they are feeling and why do they feel so. They realize the links between their feelings and what they think , do, and say. They also recognize how their feelings affect their performance and they have a guiding awareness of their values and goals.
  • 4. 3. Accurate Self-Assessment: Knowing one’s strengths and limits. People with this competence are aware of their strengths and weaknesses. They are reflective, learning from experience, open to candid feedback, new perspectives, continuous learning, and self- development and they are able to show a sense of humor and perspective about themselves. 4. Self Confidence: Sureness about one’s self-worth an capabilities. People with this competence areresent themselves with self-assurance. They can voice views that are unpopular and go out on a limb for what is right and they are decisive, able to make sound decisions despite uncertainties and pressures. 5. Self-Regulation : Self-regulation allows you to select the particular emotion you wish to experience at a given moment, in a particular situation. This process takes a lot of practice and a considerable amount of self-control, but mastering it will allow you to take ownership of your emotions, and free you from being anyone else's emotional victim because you and you along will manage your emotional reaction.
  • 5. It needs to be noted, however, that self-regulation is more than merely "stuffing" or ignoring negative emotions. It is an active process that takes considerable training and focus to accomplish. 6. Self Control : Managing disruptive emotions and impulses. People with this competence manage their impulsive feelings and distressing emotions well, stay composed, positive, and unflappable even in trying moment and they can think clearly and stay focused though they are under pressure. 7.Trustworthiness: Maintaining standards of honesty and integrity. People with this competence can act ethically and are above reproach build trust through their reliability and authenticity,admit their own mistakes and confront unethical actions in others and they take tough, principled stands even if they are unpopular.
  • 6. 8.Conscientiousness: Taking responsibility for personal performance. People with this competence meet commitments and keep promises, hold themselves accountable for meeting their objectives. They are also organized and careful in their work. 9. Adaptability : Flexibility in handling change. People with this competence are smoothly handle multiple demands, shifting priorities, and rapid change, adapt their responses and tactics to fit fluid circumstances. They are also flexible in how they see events. 10.Innovativeness: Being comfortable with and open to novel ideas and new information. People with this competence seek out fresh ideas from a wide variety of sources, entertain original solutions to problem, generate new ideas and take fresh perspectives and risks in their thinking. 11. Self-Motivation : This competence allows you to use your emotions to affect positive change in your life through dedicated pursuit of your goals, no matter the obstacles in your way. This process requires you to employ your emotions toward near-complete positivity, optimism, confidence and persistence. It is essential that you release the negative emotional reactions to achieve self-motivation.
  • 7. 12. Achievement Drive : Striving to improve or meet a standard of excellence. People with this competence are results-oriented, with a high drive to meet their objectives and standards, set challenging goals and take calculated risks. They pursue information to reduce uncertainty and find ways to do better. They learn how to improve their performance too. 13. Commitment : Aligning with the goals of the group or organization. People with this competence are readily make personal or group sacrifices to meet a larger organizational goal, find a sense of purpose in the larger mission,use the group’s core values in making decisions and clarifying choices and actively seek out opportunities to fulfill the group’s mission. 14. Initiative : Readiness to act on opportunities. People with this competence are ready to seize opportunities, pursue goals beyond what’s required or expected of them, cut through red tape and bend the rules when necessary to get the job done and mobilize others through unusual, enterprising efforts.
  • 8. 15. Optimism : Persistence in pursuing goals despite obstacles and setbacks. People with this competence are persist in seeking goals despite obstacles and setbacks. They operate from hope of success rather than fear of failure and they see setbacks as due to manageable circumstance rather than a personal flaw
  • 9. QUESTION 35 The emotional competencies are those that enable us to put the IQ that we have and the professional (technical) skills that we have effectively and successfully into use in a business context and in life in general. Given this scenario, describe the following terms and what it means to you:  Emotional Self-Awareness  Accurate Self-Assessment  Self-Confidence
  • 10. 1. Emotional Self-Awareness: recognizing how our emotions affect our performance. It is the ability to recognize one’s emotions and their effects. It is the ability to effectively read how we react to cues in the environment and be aware of how one’s emotions affect performance. Having this competence, I surely know which emotions I’m feeling of and why do I feel so. I would be able to realize the links between my feelings and what I think, do, and say. I also could recognize how my feelings affect my performance. I will have a guiding awareness of the values and goals I want to achieve.
  • 11. 2. Accurate Self-Assessment: knowing one’s own inner resources, abilities and limits. It is being aware of one’s strengths and limitations. It is based on the desire to receive feedback and new perspectives about oneself and to be motivated by continuous learning and self- development. It implies having the ability to target areas for change. Having this competence, I will always aware of my strengths and weaknesses, I’ll be reflective, learning from experience, open to candid feedback, new perspectives, continuous learning, and self-development and I will be able to show a sense of humor and perspective about myself.
  • 12. 3. Self-Confidence: a strong sense of one’s self- worth and capabilities . It is a belief in one’s own capability to accomplish a task and select an effective approach to a task or problem. This includes confidence in one’s ability as expressed in increasingly challenging circumstances and confidence in one’s decisions or opinion. Having this competence, I will be able to present myself with self-assurance, I can voice views that are unpopular and go out on a limb for what is right. I will also decisive and able to make sound decisions despite uncertainties and pressures.
