At PVHS we use an older version of Course Planner that is accessed under the COURSES tab, then click on COURSE REQUESTS. In MY COURSE REQUESTS: Students then have see a window that lists course recommendations made by their English, Math and Foreign Language teachers. These recommendations must be selected in the corresponding subject areas and are not defaulted. SELECT COURSES menu option allows students to use a “drop down” to select courses. If they wish to take a course that was not recommended for them they fill out a “Request for Placement” form in the document library. Once all courses are selected, they SAVE AND VALIDATE YOUR REQUESTS and SUBMIT FOR APPROVAL. Students meet individually with their Counselor to go over their proposed schedule. All courses in the Course Planner will be shown as “pending” until their meeting, after which it will be “approved” I think you can talk about your process here and I can also shared how course planner works (since you’re using the requesting tool too).
The Resume feature is found in the ABOUT ME tab
We found the Resume feature is a good introduction to Naviance for our freshmen. The emphasis is organization and the importance of keeping a record of awards and extra curricular activities. Keeping this information updated will only help when filling out college applications. A print out of a resume is only a click away for employment and college interviews.
Test scores are found under the “ABOUt me” tab
Naviance Sophomore year builds on Freshman year features by introducing the PERSONALITY TYPE inventory and EXPLORE CAREERS
Sophomores are encouraged to update their resume and test scores.
As part of Sophomore Counseling, our guidance counselors work with their students in taking the Personality Type inventory in their English classes then follow up with information on how to interpret the results.
The Personality Test is part of the career guidance resources provided to our students. Students are showed how to use the career results to further explore the college majors that support those careers. In th 10 th and 11 th grades, students are encouraged to further look at the colleges that have those majors as a beginning of their college searches.
The EXPLORE Careers feature offers information on specific jobs, skills, tasks and wages. There are also some videos. The interest areas are based on the Holland code and this feature also lists related occupations.
It is searchable by keyword, alphabet, category and Holland code.
Naviance is also complimentary to the results of EXPLORE and PLAN that also has an interest inventory as part of the test. Results are returned to students with their score sheets as the “WORLD OF WORK” Naviance is also complimentary to the results of EXPLORE and PLAN that also has an interest inventory as part of the test. Results are returned to students with their score sheets as the “WORLD OF WORK” Naviance is part of the career guidance resources offered to our students along with the EXPLORE and PLAN tests that both have an interest inventory. The results are returned as the World of Work Map.
Junior year builds on freshman and sophomore years
In addition to updating their resume and tests scores with their PSAT scores. Counselors review the results of the Personality Type as a jump-off point in beginning a college search. Review of the results looking at the careers, college majors and colleges that offer those majors.
Students are introduced to SuperMatch as another feature used to search for colleges on Naviance. For those old school users, it is a more visually attractive and improved verson of “college match”
Click on the criteria items on the left column, Rank them, then Shazamm a list of results is produced. Very attractive for students and easy to use.
These are the criteria categories to help “find you best fit”.
Examples of search results using SUPERMATCH. Top box is an example of “ranking” of what are important criteria.
Juniors are encouraged to begin their college searching and also utilize the “College I’m Thinking About” feature to manage their college searches and interest in colleges
How to add to the list Permission set so parents can ’t add to the list Note Delivery types “ Move to Application List” used in Senior Year
I will add Visits scheduled by Admission Representatives coming to our campus and Send Email Notification. This emphasizes importance of “colleges I’m thinking about” or “colleges I’m applying to” in order to receive automatic notifications. Students can visit this list at any time to see who is coming to our campus. Students must also sign up for visits that allows me to generate a list of interested students that I can print and give to the Admission Rep.
Importance of updating test scores and completing the SENIOR SURVEY.
Senior Year completes everything from freshman year
Update RESUME and TEST SCORES Review SUPER MATCH RESULTS Sign up for COLLEGE VISITS and check the SCHOLARSHIP list that we update with local scholarships available to our students
Senior year is when students move the colleges they intend to apply to from the “THINKING ABOUT” box to the “APPLYING TO” box. As easy as a click.
PVHS has moved to using e-Docs. We did a gradual transition submitting Counselor Letters of Recommendation the first year, then opening it up to all teachers the next year. It was a great recommendation made to me and it worked very well, especially for a school our size.
This is a great view to see where a student is going to apply and what documents are needed. The delivery confirmation has been a great way for our Registrar to track delivery of documents, when it has been downloaded by the college and when the file was opened.
Teachers used e-Docs for the first time this year. It was a short learning curve for them and once they saw how much time they saved, especially filling out the Common Application Teacher Evaluation, they all started to rave about it. Students can request letters of recommendation to their teacher with notes. At PVHS, students must also verbally request letters, especially as a confirmation for those teachers who don ’t always check their email accounts!
Surveys are important to us in order to gather data. All Seniors must fill out a survey that has been created especially for PVHS students. The survey is also linked to our Senior Awards because it tracks scholarship offers. Students who are “offered” a scholarship are eligible to receive a silver cord for graduation. The cord incentive gets everyone to fill out the survey. Last year, as the result of the survey we were able to determine PVHS students were offered a total of $12.9 million in merit and athletic scholarships. It also allows me to see what schools are offering our students scholarships and see any trends.
If you highlight your process on slide 6, I can talk about Course Planner here instead.
PVHS uses Naviance data in our School Profile, but I also create a Class Profile that outlines some of the highlights the acceptance and matriculation data of our graduating class.
It is basically a chart of a scattergram. All UCs, Ivies and the top 20 schools where PVHS students applied are featured in the report.
Privacy is protected and in cases where fewer than 5 students were accepted, the averages of the applicants are shown. This is something set by PVHS to protect the identity of students and their GPA/Scores.
The report also lists all of the school where PVHS students applied, accepted and attended for that year. It is a good example for rising students and parents to see that PVHS students are going all over the U.S.
Another great idea from a previous WACAC conference is listing colleges where students were accepted by GPA. It ’s another way to start a college search and give students ideas of where they might investigate and eventually apply with a disclaimer of “no guarantee”.
