  2. 2. SOCIAL BOOKMARKING <ul><li>It is a way to store, organize, search, and manage bookmarking of the WebPages on the internet. </li></ul><ul><li>It is like remembering or saving our interested WebPages online and / or sharing them with whomever we want to. </li></ul>

History <ul><li>Booking marking started around April, 1996. </li></ul><ul><li>Competition growth with in three years. </li></ul><ul><li>companies in social bookmarking are Backflip, Blink, Clip2, ClickMarks, HotLinks. </li></ul><ul><li>One milestone is del.icio.us entering social bookmarking in late 2003. </li></ul>

Advantages <ul><li>classification of Internet resources </li></ul><ul><li>Elimination of algorithmic attempts to determine the content and classification. </li></ul><ul><li>Introduction of human element in social book marking search engine concepts. </li></ul><ul><li>Ranking or rating of the websites which helps end users. </li></ul><ul><li>Examples of usefulness of social bookmarking is like libraries etc., </li></ul>

Disadvantages <ul><li>Lack of controlled vocabulary, like no standard set of keywords form the point of view of search data. </li></ul><ul><li>mistagging due to spelling errors. </li></ul><ul><li>tags that can have more than one meaning. </li></ul><ul><li>unclear tags due to synonyms / antonyms. </li></ul><ul><li>No hierarchical relationships between tags. </li></ul>

Tag (metadata) <ul><li>It is a keyword or term associated with or assigned to a piece of information. </li></ul><ul><li>usually chosen informally and personally. </li></ul><ul><li>Generally created by item author/creator or by its consumer/viewers/community. </li></ul><ul><li>can be made in singular or in plural. </li></ul><ul><li>Official tag is a keyword adopted by events and conferences for participants to use in their web publications such as blog entries, photos of the event, and presentation slides. </li></ul>

Popular examples of tags usage <ul><li>del.icio.us - A social bookmarking site that allows users to bookmark many sites and then tag them with many descriptive words, allowing other people to search by those terms to find pages that other people found useful. </li></ul><ul><li>Flickr - A service that allows users to tag images with many specific nouns, verbs, and adjectives that describe the picture. This is then searchable. </li></ul><ul><li>Gmail - A webmail site that was one of the first to allow categorization of objects using tags, known as &quot;labels&quot; on emails. </li></ul>
