What is Social Media?   Social media is  content  created by  people  using  highly accessible and scalable  publishing technologies. At its most basic sense, social media is a shift in how  people discover, read and share news, information and content.   Social media has become extremely popular because it allows people to connect in the online world to form relationships for personal and business.  Businesses also refer to social media as user-generated content (UGC)  or consumer-generated media (CGM).
The Facts!   According to Nielson Online, social media networking sites:  •  Are more popular than email •  Account for 10% of all time spent on the Internet Worldwide traffic to Twitter.com reached 10 million visitors in February 2009, up a whopping 700 percent from the same time last year, according to comScore.  There are currently more than 200 million active Facebok users, with the fastest growing demographic being those 35 years of age and older. More than 3.5 billion minutes are spent on Facebook each day (worldwide).

At its most basic sense, social media is a shift in how people discover, read and share news, information and content. Social media has become extremely popular because it allows people to connect in the online world to form relationships for personal and business. Businesses also refer to social media as user-generated content (UGC) or consumer-generated media (CGM).

According to Nielson Online, social media networking sites: • Are more popular than email • Account for 10% of all time spent on the Internet Worldwide traffic to Twitter.com reached 10 million visitors in February 2009, up a whopping 700 percent from the same time last year, according to comScore. There are currently more than 200 million active Facebok users, with the fastest growing demographic being those 35 years of age and older. More than 3.5 billion minutes are spent on Facebook each day (worldwide).
