What are tenses?
Tenses are one of the ways that we show when something happened. We show different tenses
in English by changing the form of the verb.
Example: She visited her doctor last week about her weight.

4. How many tenses are there? How do I learn them?
English has a total of 15 tenses (!) Sounds scary, doesn’t it? Don’t worry; there are some
patterns we can learn that help us to understand any of the tenses easily. You will only need to
understand the following ideas: present, past, future (these words show when the action
happened) as well as simple, continuous, perfect (these words show how long the action
continues for) .

What are you doing after class today? This action is happening now (after class today)

25. EmSAT Strategies
The EmSAT exam will mainly test tenses in grammar sections 1 and 2. You should look for
time phrases in the sentence which tell you when the action is happening. You should also
focus on the subject of the sentence and check the verb is in the correct form.
e.g.
I always ____ to do exercise 3-4 times a week.
