What are tenses?
Tenses are one of the ways that we show when something happened. We show different tenses
in English by changing the form of the verb.
Example: She visited her doctor last week about her weight.
Grammar Skills: Tenses 1 GRAMMAR
When is each of the actions happening?
a. I’m playing football with my friends tonight.
b. They always try to maintain a healthy diet.
c. I’ve been to the gym twice this week.
d. Diabetes will be a serious health concern in the UAE in the future.
Highlight the verbs and time phrases in these sentences. ACTIVITY
How many tenses are there? How do I learn them?
English has a total of 15 tenses (!) Sounds scary, doesn’t it? Don’t worry; there are some
patterns we can learn that help us to understand any of the tenses easily. You will only need to
understand the following ideas: present, past, future (these words show when the action
happened) as well as simple, continuous, perfect (these words show how long the action
continues for) .
Type 1: Present tenses
Examples:
What do usually do at the weekend? This action happens repeatedly (every weekend)
What are you doing after class today? This action is happening now (after class today)
At weekends, I usually go/am going to my grandparents house for lunch.
After class today, I go/am going to the gym to do exercise.
Try to explain the differences between the pairs of sentences. ACTIVITY
*Use the time phrases to help you.
a. My students are not lazy. They always work very hard.
b. I’m working very hard today because I have a lot of tasks to finish.
a. I eat 5 portions of fruit and vegetables every day.
b. I’m eating healthily right now because I want to lose some weight.
a. Most people learn to swim when they are children.
b. I’m learning German because I want to travel there next summer.

EmSAT Strategies
The EmSAT exam will mainly test tenses in grammar sections 1 and 2. You should look for
time phrases in the sentence which tell you when the action is happening. You should also
focus on the subject of the sentence and check the verb is in the correct form.
e.g.
I always ____ to do exercise 3-4 times a week.
a. try present simple, verb for subject “I”
b. tries present simple, verb for subject “he/she/it”
c. am trying present continuous
d. trying grammatically incorrect!
