PEDOGENESIS
OF THE
PHILIPPINES
Pedogenesis
• is the science and study of the
processes that lead to the
formation of soil (soil
evolution)
Luzon
3 GROUPS OF SOIL RESOURCES
OF CENTRAL LUZON
1)Alluvial soils of the floodplains of Pampanga,
especially the Candaba Swamp; part of Bulacan
and Nueva Ecija.
2)Volcanic soils of the piemont and upland areas of
Zambales, west and southwestern part of Tarlac
around the vicinity of Mt. Arayat in Pampanga, and
eastern part of Bulacan and Nueva Ecija.
3)Residual soils derived from sedimentary rocks in
the mountains and upland areas of Lake Uacon of
Zambales, Pantabangan of Nueva Ecija and
AngatDamof Bulacan, major and minor rivers of
Region III, and the wetlands along the coastal
plains of Pampanga and Bulacan.
Alluvial soil
• a fine-grained fertile
soil deposited by
water flowing over
flood plains or in river
beds
• clay or silt or gravel
carried by rushing
streams and
deposited where the
stream slows down
Volcanic Soil
• also known as
Andisols, are formed
from volcanic ash and
cinder deposits.
• Andisols are usually
light and fluffy and are
easily tilled.
• typically very fertile
soils
Residual Soil
• the soil that is
remaining after the
soluble elements
have been dissolved
• the part of the earth's
surface consisting of
humus and
disintegrated rock
Visayas
Highly weathered soils
 (or strongly weathered
soils) are soils that have
undergone prolonged and
intense weathering under
the net leaching
environment of the humid
tropics.
• These soils are clayey,
deep, reddish, acidic, and
have low nutrient status
Mindanao
Loam soil
 is soil composed of
sand, silt, and clay
in relatively even
proportions
contain more
nutrients, moisture
and humus
