What is Pharmacy ?
 Pharmacy derived from word “PHARMAKON” means
MEDICINE or DRUG.
 In General sense It is a place where medicine or drugs
are sold.
 Pharmacy is the art and science of manufacturing
and dispensing of drugs prepared by natural and
synthetic sources and using them for the treatment
and prevention of diseases.
Who is a Pharmacist ???
 Pharmacist also known as DRUGGIST or CHEMIST
 Pharmacist is a healthcare professional who practices
pharmacy focusing on safe and effective use of
medicines.
What are the professional skills
of a Pharmacist?
Knowledge of
 Drug synthesis,
 Quality control tests,
 Detection of degradation products,
 Storage of Pharmaceutical products,
 Dosage form preparation,
 Route of administration,
 Drug – Drug and Drug – Food interactions.
Role of Pharmacist ?
Traditionally it was to
Compound and Dispense the required medications for
the patients.
Pharmacist in Western countries
 A well trained “Happy to help person”.
 Filling of prescription.
 Offers professional advice to patients regarding the
usage of medications.

 Until the early 1980”s only 11 universities and 26 colleges
 Acc to PCI 2005 calender 220 degree institutions with an
enrolment of 12,506 students and as per AICTE , the total
number of degree colleges were 445 with an admission of
24,672 students.
 In 2007, the number increased to 854 with an intake of
more than 52,000 students.
 There were also 583 institutions providing Diploma in
Pharmacy with a capacity of more than 34,000 students
 Majority of institutions are privately funded with 91 % of
privately job acquiring students.

Pharmaceutical packaging is defined as the economical
means of providing presentation, protection,
identification, information, convenience and stability of
the product.
