2. Social Case Work
It is an enabling process performed by a social worker
with individual to solve his psycho-emotional and
social problems to adjust him in society.
Mary Richmond
Mary Richmond (In 1917) defined,” Social Case Work
may be defined as the Art of doing different things
with different people, co-operating with them to
achieve some of their own & societies betterment.”
3. Swift (1939):
• “Social Case work is the art of assisting the individual
in developing and making use of his personal capacity
to deal with problems which he faces in his social
environment.”
Perlman (1957):
• “Social Case work is a process used by certain human
welfare agencies to help individuals to cope more
effectively with their problems in social functioning.”
* “A PERSON with a PROBLEM comes to a PLACE where
social worker(Professional) helps him through a well-
defined PROCESS.” – Perlman.
4. Person
• Individual come or referred to agency and often
found under stress
• Disturbing forces in person’s life mostly beyond
his control
• He is unable to make adjustment by himself
• Case worker must understand the following
limitations that

overcome frustration
• Well being depends on stable personality structure,
due to different stresses client lacks motivation and
emotional stability
• A client often going through double stresses
– Threat or attack of problem
– His reaction to his inability
• It is observed that often potential problem is worse
than a real problem

product of nature & nurture”
• He should be understood with reference to his
“Bio-Psycho-Social background”
• His behavior depends on his Past experience,
Present situation and Future expectation
• He is conditioned by past and affected by present
and future

• A situation or matter that blocks the desirable goals
or objective called problem
• In Case Work context, problem emerge when a
person’s psycho-social functioning get disturb
• Problem in a person’s life tends to create a “Chain
Reaction”, so its important to realize which one is
the cause and or the effect
• Problem may be Economic, social, psychological,
recreational, educational and physical
8. Case worker need to understand
• The different aspects of the problem
• Multifaceted problem may be categories which is
needed for effective diagnosis
i. What client needs and wants
ii. What would be the desirable solution on the
bases of professional judgment
iii. What the Agency for and can offer
9. Place/ Agency
• Place is an organized institution established for
the well being of individual and society as well
Agency may be
• Private or public
• Primary or secondary
• Local, provincial or national
• Closed or open
10. • Each welfare agency offer programs of particular
area of Social Services
• Case Workers are employed by agency
• The nature and function of case worker’s services
defined by the agency

• Case Work is “an Art and can only partly be taught”
without certain motherly qualities and intuition,
desirable goals can hardly be achieved
Process involves
• To establish professional, conducive and therapeutic
relationship (Rapport) with client
• To know that client is often worried, Anxious and
some time angry and hostile

he wants
• Develop a Social History with detailed discussion
and subsequent interviews
• Social History is the picture of client’s Bio-Psycho-
Social situation
• By means of Social History, constructive and
practical help is extended to client

• In Social Work, a Professional Case Worker is employed by a
government, non government agency,
Professional need :
• To take care of individuals
• To provide them with advocacy, information or other services
• To Focused on the person and his family
• To manage the follow-up of consultations and linked to other
services

multidisciplinary clinical pathway plans
• To facilitates the flow of information among the
members of the team
• To Plans multidisciplinary meetings and assumes a
leadership role in their conduct
