William Shakespeare is still famous over 400 years after his death because his plays are performed and studied around the world. He was born in 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon, England during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I and wrote 37 plays, working as both a playwright and actor in London where he owned the Globe Theatre. Students continue to study his works in school and universities, and his plays are the focus of many theatre festivals and dedicate Shakespeare theatres around the world.
