2. • Born in Omaha Nabraska in
1920
• His Father was killed by White
groups because he was a civil
rights activist..
• Her mother sent to mental
hospital
• Dropped out of school and got
involved in drug dealing,
gambling, racketeering,
robbery and prostitution.
• Sent to prison for 6 years.
• Converts to Islam in Prison as
his brother suggested.
• Becomes a Minister for the
Nation of Islam.
• Changes his last name to X
because it is a slave name.

3. • Founded by Alijah Muhammed
• They believed white man is devil
• They started their own shops,
businesses, schools and churches
• They wanted a separate black nation
on land given to them by the USA.
• They demanded separate state for
African Americans
• Many blacks were attracted to the
ideas of the Black Muslims

4. • Malcolm had serious
arguments with the leader
of the Nation of Islam
• He was suspended from
the movement in 1963
• He then travelled to Africa
and the Middle East
• Spring 1964 his views
changed after a visit to
Mecca

5. • Believed African Americans
should stand up and fight for their
freedom.
• Believed black people help white
to continue their supremacy
• Believed violence was necessary
to earn freedom.
• “We don’t go for desegregation.
We go for separation. Separation
is when you have your own. You
control your own economy, you
control your own politics, you
control your own society.

6. • Believed that the Christian
religion was based on the
white culture.
• “I don’t go along with any
kind of non-violence unless
everybody’s going to be non-
violent. If they make the Ku
Klux Klan non-violent I’ll be
non-violent. You get freedom
by letting your enemy know
that you’ll do anything to get
your freedom... It’s the only
way to get it... Fight them, and
you’ll get your freedom.”

7. • His visit to Arabia and Africa changed his
ideology
• He appeared to be international leader
• He changed his view toward whites and blacks
• Ex. “In a few weeks in Africa I saw what I had
never seen in thirty-nine years here in America.
I saw all races, all colours, blue-eyed blondes to
black-skinned Africans in true brotherhood... In
the past yes, I have made sweeping indictments
(criticisms) of all white people. I never will be
guilty of that again as I now know that some
whites are truly sincere and are capable of
being brotherly towards a black man.”
• “You can't separate peace from freedom
because no one can be at peace unless he has
his freedom.”
• “I believe in human beings, and that all human
beings should be respected as such, regardless
of their color.”

8. • “He got the peace prize, we got
the problem. ... If I'm following a
general, and he's leading me into a
battle, and the enemy tends to give
him rewards, or awards, I get
suspicious of him. Especially if he
gets a peace award before the war
is over.”
• The goal of Dr King is to give
Negroes a chance to sit-in
segregated restaurants beside the
same white folks who have
persecuted, beaten and lynched
black people for years. Dr King
seems to want black people to
forgive the people who have
beaten, bought, sold and lynched
our people for four hundred years.
• Dr. King wants the same thing I
want - freedom!”

- He was motivative when he was talking to

- He was honest and trustworthy
• Clarke (1994) asserted Malcolm "speak to
the reader and the non-reader, the college
professor and the illiterate, simultaneously,
and his message would get across to all of
them" (Clarke, 1994, pp. 138-139).

10. – Tensions arose between
Malcolm and the Nation
of Islam.
– Malcolm said he would
defend himself against
death threats.
– He was shot 16 times
during a speech in 1965.
