3. History of the town
• In the 10-11 century before the invasion of
Hungarian tribes, the territory of the modern
city and its environs were parts of the Kievan
Rus in the 10th century there existed a
fortified settlement. Although the date of the
city is not known, but its history is closely
connected with the castle which now is in the
ruins. The construction of a wooden fortress to
protect the salt route from Solotvyno mines
started in 1090, therefore, it is likely that the
settlement around it emerged in the 11th-12th
centuries.
• After numerous attacks of Polovtsian tribes
Khust was populated mainly byf Saxon settlers
invited by the king of Hungary . In 1242, the
castle and the city was destroyed by the
Tatars. In 1318 the castle was restored.
4. Legend about the origin of the name
of the city Khust
• Once the evil decided to leave hell and return to
Earth. He came to the plain of spectacular scenery,
but a trouble happened to him – his tail stuck in
the hole in the ground. He did everything but to
pull the tail out but failed. In despair he howled
the words that were heard in all the corners of the
world: “Oh, my hvust-hvust-hvust!..” that means
“tail”. The valley rolled the echo of his desperate
cry: “Hust-Hust-Hust...” Since then the place and
the town are called Khust
5. Khust castle
• The story of Khust is closely connected with the
castle, which is now in ruins. The construction of the
fortress to guard the salt route began on in 1090,
during the reign of king lászló I the Saint (G. p. 1077-
1095), and lasted until 1191. In 1378 Khust castle was
given to the magistrates of Dredge and a Beam for
Royal debts.
• In 1405 the king of Zsigmond (Sigismund) of
Luxembourg (G. p. 1387 – 1437) reports Golab and
the nearby village to his close friend and secret
Chancellor, Imre Perenyi. However, after some time
the castle remained without a master.
• In 1766 the explosion of the gun powder during a
thunderstorm destroyed or burned the castle and all
the buildings around.
7. Valley of narcissi
• A unique monument of nature, the Valley of Narcissi is located in
the outskirts of Khust between the rivers the Tysa and the Khustets.
According to the legend, in the mirrored waters of Khustets, the son
of the river and nymphs – Narcissus saw his reflection in the water,
fell in love and died of grief. Later, at the river bank people saw a
gentle flower of cold beauty and fragrance that intoxicates.
