By the end of today’s lesson you should be able to:

? Explain the differences between health, exercise and fitness

     ? Understand how the above relate to performance

  ? Know the names of the 5 components of health related
    exercise and the 6 components of skill related fitness
Definition of health

The World Health Organization (WHO)
    Task 1 – defines pairs list as many
             Working in health as:
     factors that can affect your health that you
     can think of (Page 1 of your workbook)
‘a state of complete mental, physical
 and social well-being and not merely
  the absence of disease or infirmity’
Health, weight and somatotypes
Illness and injury
Psychological factors
Disabilities
Alcohol, drugs and smoking
Diet
Social factors – family, education
           Check your answers for Task 1
So a healthy person is:
•   physically well – Your heart, lungs and
    other body systems are working properly.
•   mentally well – You are able to cope with
    stress and control your emotions. You feel
    positive about yourself.
•   socially happy – You have friendship and
    support. You feel as though you have a
    value to society.
•   free from disease – You are free from any
    disease and feel 100%

‘ability to meet the demands of the environment’

Being fit means being able to cope with everyday activities such as school,
                    college and work as well as home life.
        Task 2 on page 2 – List as many passive and active jobs
 Fitter people can perform at a higher level as they can run further, move
                 faster and perform more difficult skills better.
‘a form of physical activity which
      maintains or improves health
         and/or physical fitness’

Health problems caused by lack of exercise:

              Heart disease
           High blood pressure
                Back pain
           Stress and tension
‘how well a task is completed’

 This is at any level where a performer takes part
              to the best of their ability.
 It could be a playing for a Sunday morning team
                  or for Real Madrid.
To enhance performance players need to be fitter.

  • 2. By the end of today’s lesson you should be able to: ? Explain the differences between health, exercise and fitness ? Understand how the above relate to performance ? Know the names of the 5 components of health related exercise and the 6 components of skill related fitness

Definition of health The World Health Organization (WHO) Task 1 – defines pairs list as many Working in health as: factors that can affect your health that you can think of (Page 1 of your workbook) ‘a state of complete mental, physical and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity’

  • 5. So a healthy person is: • physically well – Your heart, lungs and other body systems are working properly. • mentally well – You are able to cope with stress and control your emotions. You feel positive about yourself. • socially happy – You have friendship and support.
