On Tuesday, December 17, it was announced that Strathcona Elementary will receive a $25.6-million seismic upgrade. To make the announcement, Chairperson Patti Bacchus was joined by Education Minister Peter Fassbender as well as trustees Mike Lombardi, Cherie Payne, Ken Denike and Sophie Woo. The event was also attended by local representatives and members of the school community.
In late December, McBride Elementary held its first ever musical performance. The musical interpretation of the Nutcracker included hundreds of students in a variety of well choreographed songs and dances. The play was so complex that teachers needed to implement a runner system to bring down different classes to perform in their sections of the musical. It was a big success performed to a packed audience in the school gym.
On Wednesday, December 18, Downtown East Education Centre (DEEC) staff held a special potluck holiday lunch for all their students. The food was homemade and delicious and received rave reviews from the students – many of whom came back for seconds and more.
On Thursday, December 19, Broadway was lit up with signs and warmed by hot chocolate as Van Tech students thanked TransLink bus drivers for all their hard work driving them around Vancouver throughout the year. The Van Tech Hot Chocolate serving is an annual event and has drawn a growing number of student volunteers every year.
Today, January 13, 2014, staff at the VSB enjoyed a celebration of the placement of pieces of art created and donated by Linda Frimer, a well-known and accomplished Vancouver artist. We also celebrated the creation and support of David Thompson student artwork also placed in the lobby of the second floor at the VSB.
