On Thursday, March 13 Gordon students set up dozens of Heritage Fair exhibits showcasing everything they knew about a variety of topics ranging from the Canadian history of World War 1 to the History of Canadian health care. During the morning, judges perused the exhibits and in the afternoon the school was open for parents to come and see the students' projects.
A few days before the break, Roberts Annex was overrun by jungle animals. Dozens of students were dressed as lions, frogs, goats and a variety of other animals for the school’s annual Spring Musical. This year the students were performing “It’s a Jungle Out There.” – so true!
On March 27th, I attended a reception co-hosted by the University of British Columbia, Faculty of Education and Out in Schools. This was a great opportunity to network with educators from UBC, Vancouver and elsewhere as well as representatives from various LGBQT organizations, including the Anxiety Disorders Lab at UBC, the BCTF, school principals, and the Out in Schools organization.
Last week, along with Dave Derpak and Ms. Grace Ou, I attended a meeting with Director General William Heng-Sheng Chuang and Isaac Chiu of the Taipei Economic office from Taiwan. We spoke of new initiatives that could see an increase in the number of students and teachers from Taiwan coming to VSB schools.
Last week, I met with the three up and coming your principals from Weir Elementary – as part of a leadership opportunity, these three students won the chance to spend a day as school administrators. The students had the opportunity to tour the Board office and meet with various staff at the Education Centre. They said the biggest cheer they got from the students at Weir was when they announced that there would be no home-work for three days.
Last Thursday, Chairperson Patti Bacchus joined the VPD and helped them launch their latest contest, which invited VSB classes to name the next 2 VPD K-9 members. The media turned out in droves to this fun event which highlighted the excellent partnership the district has with the police. Best of luck to any students and classes who choose to participate in this contest – although my entry will surely win – Boo/Hoo, Sit/Stay, Pluto/Goofy, Hands/Up, Romeo/Juliet
