2. Relationship between the music and
the lyrics Each slang word changes to a
different person in the
montage, an example of this
• The relationship between the music and the is;
visuals is illustrated. This is done because of
the way in which the transitions pan out
with the fast tempo of the music. This is
shown at the beginning when the music
slowly builds up into a crescendo before the
drop is initiated. The lyrics are also shown 1st slang
as an illustration, this is shown when each word:
slang word is spoken the camera changes ‘Blud’
into a montage shot (in the chorus) showing
different subjects speaking the slang words
in time with the music.
2nd slang
word:
The slang words are spoken in ‘bredrin’
time as soon as the chorus
drops, this is a typical
dubstep convention that is
used throughout the music 3rd slang
video, illustrating the drop word:
and the fast tempo of the ‘Brudda’
montage and lyrics spoken
e.g. The slang in the chorus.
3. Relationship between the music and
visuals
The music in contrast with the visuals is used according to the onscreen
movements and the range of quick shots of the main artist in different locations,
this reinforces the quick tempo and how dubstep is usually associated with a fast
beat. This is shown from the beginning when the artist is casually walking through
a tunnel and the drop quicks in which increases the speed of the shots and the
clip duration shortens quickly changing from one location to another.
4. Iconography
The iconography in the music video is
typical in what you would expect in a
Grime/Dubstep video because of the
urban locations that are used such as
the council estate backgrounds, graffiti
tagged locations, the typical ‘hoodies’
and baseball hats, with the sway of hand
movements and expressions.
As shown in the top picture, the iconographic style is
changed around as an old man is seen to be using
the slang words in the video. This is shown
throughout as people of different age groups and
‘styles’ as in social groups are seen going along with
the slang lyrics
The way in which the video is conducted
isn't the usual images you would expect
because of the quick montage shots of
different people singing the lyrics,
reason being is due to it being a dubstep
video, and the grime conventions of
having one usual set location for the
filming to take place
5. Close ups
In the music video, there aren't many close ups of the main artist but there are several of
the supporting casts. The main emphasis used on the close ups are to reinforce the slang
words, specifically on when P-money uses slang. The main words which are used on the
close ups have an emphasis to them, being why the close up is used on that point to
accentuate them words.
6. Voyeurism
Towards the end of the
music video emphasis is
created by the swaying
of the woman besides
the main artist as she
moves left to right
showing her feminine
side. This makes the
woman appear more
sexually appealing, this
type of scene is rarely
shown throughout the
music video.
7. Intertextual references
P-money Black Eyed Peas
An example of intertextuality used in this video is one which can be seen as a
convention used by the black eye pees, how they change the camera to someone else
so it appears as if they’re singing the lyrics. The two images one of P-Moneys video
and the black eyed pees shows the similarity of the conventions used in the Slang like
this video.
The video also uses other mainstream artists such as D double E who’s a grime artist
as well as Professor green.
