As a fan of good music and as a fan of good poetry. When I was around eleven or twelve I would listen to the radio stations, 106 KMEL or WILD 94.9. I’d watch MTV everyday. However, there came a time where I was just straight up sick with the rap and beats that were being put out every month or so. I never liked the emphasis on busting caps in your asses or the equation of men being pimps and women being ho’s. I started listening less frequently and then all together just tuned out of radio and t.v. I wanted something that wasn’t the same tired beat or had a more constructive message that rappers were trying to get across.
KRS-ONE is one of the better known rappers who are still relevant and performing today. His name suggests, “Knowledge Reigns Supreme Over Nearly Everyone” and knowledge is a subject that he often focuses on within his raps. As a teenager, KRS-ONE lived in homeless shelters within the South Bronx area where he cultivated his interest in hip hop and dabbled in Hare Krishna spirituality. His first bout with success came with his band, Boogie Down Productions with DJ Scott La Rock. During this time he founded the Stop The Violence Movement after a fan was killed after a show with public enemy. KRS performed with many other big name rappers in a benefit concert supporting his movement. KRS went on to have a lasting career in hip hop and founded Temple of Hip Hop, a culture recognized by the UN, to encourage people to preserve the hip hop culture and write socially conscious lyrics.
