This Isaiah bible study article examines pride.
Isaiah Bible Study: The Prideful Heart Says “I Have Done
This”
In today’s Isaiah bible study, we are going to take a look at Isaiah chapter 10, verses 1213.
“I will punish the king of Assyria for the willful pride of his heart and the haughty
look in his eyes. For he says: ‘By the strength of my hand I have done this, and by
my wisdom, because I have understanding.” (NIV)
First, let’s examine the text here in the book of Isaiah.
In this verse, God is explaining that he is going to punish the king of Assyria because he is
prideful. The king credited his victories and accomplishments to his own strength and wisdom
and not to God.
The king is like so many of us who fail to see how God is responsible for our successes and
how God uses us for his purposes, and that his purposes will always prevail (Isaiah 10:7).
God said he would punish the king after finishing his work against Mount Zion and Jerusalem.
Right now, God was using the Assyrians to judge his people b/c they were godless.
2. The Assyrians didn’t intend to be used by God; they only wanted to destroy many nations (Isaiah
10:7).
Isaiah Bible Study: What did we learn about God from
this text in the book of Isaiah?
God uses others to accomplish HIS purposes whether they intentionally wanted to do so or not.
God punishes prideful and arrogant people who don’t realize that they are tools in the hands of
God to be used for his purposes.
God is sovereign and we are tools in his hands to be used for his purposes.
None of our accomplishments or successes have been done without God or without his power
working through us.
Isaiah Bible Study: What Did I Learn From Today’s Text?
Today’s Isaiah bible study verses reminded me that I need to thank God for my successes and
give him the glory when sharing my accomplishments with others.
I need to remember that God works through me for his purposes and that I am a tool in God’s
hands. These verses helped me to remember that whatever I have accomplished, it has been
b/c of God.
I need to thank God for my successes and not boast in my own strength. God wants me to be
humble.
These verses also help me to remember that God is not only the reason for my successes but
he is also behind the success and accomplishments of other people.
I also realized that our nation doesn’t always acknowledge God or credit him when we
experience victories; instead, we boast in our own plans, in ourselves, and in our army.
Instead, our nation should acknowledge God’s power when we have victories and praise him for
what HE has done.
Isaiah Bible Study: How You Can Apply Today’s Text to
4. New Actions: praising God, boasting of God, crediting God for my accomplishments
New Results: others praising God for my accomplishments
In order to believe and build your faith that God is responsible for your success:
1. Think of a past accomplishment or achievement.
2. Write down 3 ways God created that success. Consider any unexpected, unplanned, or unprepared for
circumstances surrounding that success that were beyond your control.
3. Now, go share what you have written down with one person. Share how God was the reason for your
success.

Isaiah Bible Study: Isaiah 10 Prayer
God, you are a sovereign and allpowerful God. You are strong, powerful, and purposeful. Your
purpose always prevails. Everything that happens, happens through you, because of you, and
through your loving hand.
God I confess that I have been prideful of accomplishments. I have credited my achievements to
my own strength, talents, and abilities. Instead of recognizing and sharing with others how every
success I had came from you and by your hand, I praised myself instead and robbed you of your
glory.
Thank you for humbling me and your people. Thank you for being in control and using us even
when our purposes don’t align with yours.
God help me to be more humble and to see your power and strength and your sovereign hand in
my past, present, and future successes.
God I pray for my government and for people in positions of authority and influence. I pray that
you humble them so they can turn to you and praise you for all of their achievements so all
people may glorify you.
I ask this in Jesus name, Amen.
