PROJECT: MAINTENANCE FACILITY AT OLD COURT ROAD STATION,
BALTIMORE, MARYLAND
Architect: URS Consultants, Baltimore, Maryland
Engineer of Record: RJM Engineering, Columbia, Maryland
General Contractor: Whiting Turner Construction
Project Manager: Kishore Gheewala, MTA, Maryland
Estimated Project Cost: $500,000
Project Description:
Two prefabricated metal buildings were installed as a part of an $11 million construction project
undertaken by the Maryland Transit Administration to construct a Metro Train maintenance
facility at Old Court Road Station for storage of MTA vehicles and equipment storage. One
building is 100 ft long, and the other 60 ft long.
Design Highlights:
• Soil exploration revealed poor site conditions underlain with rock and fill material resulting in
poor bearing capacity. Spread footings, grade beams and pedestal piers were designed and cast
monolithically to zsafely transfer wind and seismic forces from the building to the underlying
soil without exceeding the soil bearing capacity.
• Close coordination was maintained with the metal building supplier to ensure proper location
of support curbs and footings in order to minimize fit up problems in the field.
• Extensive analysis was performed at the foundation design stage to ensure overall settlement of
the building and individual footing settlement did not exceed metal building manufacturer
recommendations.
