Topic: The role of Social Science in promoting
the spirit of International Understanding.

INTRODUCTION
The signatories of the united nations chapter have pledged to live together in peace with one
another good neigh boors to take effective measures for the removed of areas of differences and
to develop friendly relations among nations. It is understood that these ends cannot be achieved
without education. This point is made explicit in the universal declaration of human rights in
1948. The current emphasis on global education in part of the long-standing tradition in the
social studies to include attention to the development of world mindedness and international
understanding. In the early grades leaning begins with children studying families, schools and
communities around the world. Deeper understanding are developed in the intermediate grades
through studies of other lands and people ,relationships between our country and other countries
,cultural interaction and sharing ,the fighting interdependence among people in places throughout
the worlds and how we are all part of a global system of human interaction .
DEFINITIONS
Lewis, a former deputy director of ONESCO stated in 1956,’’international understanding in the
ability to observe critically and objectively and appraise the conduct of men everywhere to each
other, respective of the nationality and culture to which they may belong.”
GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
Centered on developing an awareness of our involvement in a global system, competence in
making decisions and judgments, and exercising influence, the goals of international
understanding education are summarized with illustrative objective for each goal.
1. To develop understanding
2. To develop thinking and decision
3. To apply and strengthen
CURRICULAM FOR INTERNATIONAL UNDERSTANDING
When education for a global perspective is regarded as one of the broad goals of education, it
becomes apparent that the addition of a new subject to the curriculum in not necessary. Teaching
for a global perspective can occur through experience the child has in music, art, science,
literature- impact almost any of the various curricular areas of a school accept international
understanding as one of into primary purposes, it will concern itself relives such as
1. The inter dependence of peoples.
2. The need for peaceful relations among nations.
3. The philosophy and practices of respect for the dignity of the individual irrespective of
race or other factors over which he or she has no control.
4. The need to develop a sensitivity to and respect for the culture of other people.
INTERNATIONAL UNDERSTANDING THROUGH SOCIAL SCIENCE
Social Science can help a lot in establishing a new social order in which every man is a citizen of
the world. Fact concepts and event need to be presented for developing international
understanding through Social Science are following.
➢ War, causes of war, result etc should be explained with some critical insight.
➢ The cultural history, the social history and the history of science must get adequate
attention along with the political history.
➢ The major inventions and discoveries of man through the ager in various parts of the
world should be given due weight
➢ The rise and fall of many civilizations and their distinct contributions to the culture of
man should be highlighted.
➢ The inter dependence of world need to be stressed particularly with reference to post war
developments and the role of international organization like UNO, NAM etc.
➢ Opportunities should be altered for studying and analyzing the prejudices of color, race,
religion, culture language in the light of objective facts.
➢ A survey of certain countries government, economy, technology, family system etc,
would develop in children on acceptance of difference and an appreciation of the reason
for cultural diversity.
➢ Adventures and explorers like Marco polo, Magellan, Columbus, Gama etc should be
emphasized.
GUIDELINES FOR TEACHERS IN TEACHING INTERNATIONAL UNDERSTANDING
The teacher’s main role is to facilitate students global awareness is not global information but
rather the development of values, perspective, decision making skills and commitment to
problem solving, the teacher become active in his/her students affective growth. Jarolimik (1990)
suggests following experience to help to build a global orientation.
INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS
Teach about the United Nations and it specialized agencies. Teachers will need to decide how
much emphasis should be placed on studies of the United Nations. As a nation, we support the
United Nations and all members of it. Our national policy is to trust that it will be influential in
averting wars and in setting disputes equitably and peacefully.
ACTIVITIES FOR EDUCATION FOR INTERNATIONAL UNDERSTANDING
A number of activities can be suggested
➢ Compile an international cookbook, a game book, a book of holidays or a book of
national sports.
➢ Invite and foreign local residents to the classroom to display traditional national customs
or skills
➢ Set aside a bulletin board for current event in other countries around the world. Associate
such new stories with their map and globe locations
➢ Write to embassies, consulates, airlines, or travel bureau for material on the countries
being studied.
➢ Teach folk songs, national anthem, poems, dances and games of other countries.
➢ Study the origin, growth and change of languages. Examine the derivation of specific
words.
➢ Develop dramatic activities based on legends, myths or stories of other countries around
the world.
➢ Prepare a travel brochure on a country, continent and region.
➢ Enter into correspondence with a class in another country.
➢ Exchange art work with a school in a foreign country.
➢ Develop a tape exchange with children of another country.
ROLE OF TEACHERS
Teacher’s role is also highlighted in the education for international understanding.
1. Teacher should play inside and outside the school as intelligent and educated adults.
2. Teacher should teach social studies effectively.
3. Teacher should understand the needs and abilities of child.
4. Teacher should be a researcher in international concept and attitudes.
5. Teacher should be a wide traveler to encourage and promote, international understanding.
6. Teacher should be objective and impartial in his/her treatment.
7. Teacher should be well informed about worldly situation.
8. Teacher should organize activities for developing international understanding
CONCLUSION
All over the world, the common man has gained a very significant place in determining the fate
of humanity as a whole. Of late these has been a good deal of talk about creating a world
community and’ world citizenship’.
This is because world affairs are no longer the exclusive concern of a small section of the
community. It these conditions are not to culminate in a universal catastrophe, the only way in to
develop international understanding leading to co-existence and co-operation. As Pandit
Jawarharlal Nehru observed,’’ The only alternative co-existence is co-distraction”

  • 3. ➢ War, causes of war, result etc should be explained with some critical insight. ➢ The cultural history, the social history and the history of science must get adequate attention along with the political history. ➢ The major inventions and discoveries of man through the ager in various parts of the world should be given due weight ➢ The rise and fall of many civilizations and their distinct contributions to the culture of man should be highlighted. ➢ The inter dependence of world need to be stressed particularly with reference to post war developments and the role of international organization like UNO, NAM etc. ➢ Opportunities should be altered for studying and analyzing the prejudices of color, race, religion, culture language in the light of objective facts. ➢ A survey of certain countries government, economy, technology, family system etc, would develop in children on acceptance of difference and an appreciation of the reason for cultural diversity. ➢ Adventures and explorers like Marco polo, Magellan, Columbus, Gama etc should be emphasized. GUIDELINES FOR TEACHERS IN TEACHING INTERNATIONAL UNDERSTANDING The teacher’s main role is to facilitate students global awareness is not global information but rather the development of values, perspective, decision making skills and commitment to problem solving, the teacher become active in his/her students affective growth. Jarolimik (1990) suggests following experience to help to build a global orientation. INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS Teach about the United Nations and it specialized agencies. Teachers will need to decide how much emphasis should be placed on studies of the United Nations. As a nation, we support the United Nations and all members of it. Our national policy is to trust that it will be influential in averting wars and in setting disputes equitably and peacefully. ACTIVITIES FOR EDUCATION FOR INTERNATIONAL UNDERSTANDING A number of activities can be suggested ➢ Compile an international cookbook, a game book, a book of holidays or a book of national sports. ➢ Invite and foreign local residents to the classroom to display traditional national customs or skills ➢ Set aside a bulletin board for current event in other countries around the world. Associate such new stories with their map and globe locations ➢ Write to embassies, consulates, airlines, or travel bureau for material on the countries being studied. ➢ Teach folk songs, national anthem, poems, dances and games of other countries. ➢ Study the origin, growth and change of languages. Examine the derivation of specific words.
  • 4. ➢ Develop dramatic activities based on legends, myths or stories of other countries around the world. ➢ Prepare a travel brochure on a country, continent and region. ➢ Enter into correspondence with a class in another country. ➢ Exchange art work with a school in a foreign country. ➢ Develop a tape exchange with children of another country. ROLE OF TEACHERS Teacher’s role is also highlighted in the education for international understanding. 1. Teacher should play inside and outside the school as intelligent and educated adults. 2. Teacher should teach social studies effectively. 3. Teacher should understand the needs and abilities of child. 4. Teacher should be a researcher in international concept and attitudes. 5. Teacher should be a wide traveler to encourage and promote, international understanding. 6. Teacher should be objective and impartial in his/her treatment. 7. Teacher should be well informed about worldly situation. 8. Teacher should organize activities for developing international understanding CONCLUSION All over the world, the common man has gained a very significant place in determining the fate of humanity as a whole. Of late these has been a good deal of talk about creating a world community and’ world citizenship’. This is because world affairs are no longer the exclusive concern of a small section of the community. It these conditions are not to culminate in a universal catastrophe, the only way in to develop international understanding leading to co-existence and co-operation.
