8. Ormolu : History of Ormolu
Ormolu is the process of applying finely ground gold to a
bronze, brass or copper object, using mercury.
The process first came to prominence in France, with 18th century
pieces particularly sought after by collectors today.
Mercury was banned in France in 1830 and new techniques took
over, evolving into the process we know today as electro-plating.
Ormolu is most commonly seen on decorative items such as
tables, clocks and vases.

104. Ormolu : Hypothesis
At present, we do not know what firm manufactured the
ormolu mounts used on Phoenix & Consolidated glass.
Could it be that Consolidated only started to use ormolu
after 1932 as there is no Ruba Rombic in ormolu?
Therefore, could Ormolu have started with Phoenix
when they had the Reuben Line molds and then
continued by Consolidated?
The one piece of Catalonian is a ruby-stained vase
which was probably done after the return of the molds to
Consolidated.
