‘Project on Ganesh Chaturthi’
Introduction:
Hindu festival celebrated on the occasion of
birthday of Lord Ganesha
Bestows his presence on earth for all his devotees
Widely worshipped as the God of
wisdom, prosperity and good fortune
Traditionally invoked at the beginning of any
new venture.
Lord Ganesh is remembered on Ganesh
Chaturthi which falls on the fourth day of the
month of Bhadrapad in the Hindu calendar.
Ganesh Chaturthi is a ten-day celebration.
Ganesh Chaturthi was being celebrated as
a public event by Peshvas in Pune since the
times of Shivaji Maharaj
With the fall of the Peshwas, Ganesh
Chaturthi lost state patronage and became a
private family celebration.
Indian freedom fighter and social reformer
Lokmanya Tilak introduced a new way of
celebrating the Ganapati festival as
collective community worship.
observed in the Hindu calander in the month of
Bhaadrapada.
starts on the Shukla Chaturthi(fourth day of the
waxing moon period).
falls between 19 August and 15 September.
But this year it is on 19th September.
lasts for 10 days.
ends on Anant Chaturdashi(fourteenth day of
the waxing moon period).
All over India, mainly in Maharashtra, Andhra
Pradesh, Karnataka and Goa.
Outside India: Nepal ,UK, US , Canada,
Mauritius, France, Singapore, Thailand,
Cambodia, Burma, and Fiji.
UK:
First time in the Vishwa Hindu Temple in 2005
Mauritius:
Celebration started here in 1896 by well known
Bhiwajee family
So popular that the Mauritian government
proclaimed Ganesh Chaturthi day as a public
holiday.
France:
Sri Manikka Vinayakar temple in Paris celebrates the
occassion in a grand manner
Lord Ganesh is mounted on a chariot which is pulled
through the streets
Numerous devotees of the Lord accompany his idol,
dancing and singing "bhajans“
Many Sri Lankans, French and even Europeans also take
part in the celebrations
USA:
 By different religious organisations
The Sai Samsthan, a Hindu society in Warrenville, Illinois
Organises and is attended by thousands of local Indians as
well as people of other nationalities.
Other well known organisations :North American Sankethi
Association of New York and The Hindu Temple Society in
Miami, Florida.
Ganesh idol is brought & ceremoniously installed by the
head of the house hold in the "home mandir"
Decorated with rangoli
"Puja" and "aarti" are performed every morning and
evening
Modak as prasaad is distributed amongst the devotees
Hugely popular, with local communities to put
up the biggest statue and the best pandal
Cultural activities: singing and theater
performances, orchestra.
Community activities: free medical checkup,
blood donation camps, charity for the poor, etc.
Bala Gangadhara Tilak, the national leader
from Maharashtra hit upon the idea of using the
Ganesh Chaturthi occasion to celebrate in a
grand way & convey political messages.
Mumbai has its own importance in
Ganeshotsav.
The Sarvajnik Ganeshotsav Mandals play a
major role in that.
Messages of social awareness :
traffic rules, water conservation pollution
control are taken up for festival
themes,awareness of need to eradicate
corruption.

some of the popular Ganesh mandals in
Mumbai: Lalbaugcha Raja, Gowda
SaraswatBrahmin Seva
Mandal(GSBC), Andhericha Raja' in
Andheri, the Ganesh Mandal in Girgaon,etc
Two to three months before ,plaster of Paris
models of Lord Ganesha are made by specially
skilled artisans.
Beautifully decorated and Lord Ganesh is
depicted in different poses.
The size of these statues may vary from 3/4 of
an inch to over 70 feet.
On the visarjan day (2nd , 5th , 7th or 10th day),
statue is taken through streets in a procession
accompanied with dancing, singing, and fanfare
Immersed in river or sea symbolizing a ritual
see-off journey towards his abode in Kailash
shouting "Ganapati Bappa Morya, Pudhachya
Varshi Laukar ya’’
Water Pollution :
natural clay was replaced by Plaster of
Paris
longer to dissolve & releases toxic
elements
Increase in acidity of water :
Chemical paints contain heavy metals
like mercury and cadmium
Non-biodegradable accessories

kneaded papers) should be used

Modak:
Lord Ganesha's favorite
sweet filling inside is made up of fresh
grated coconut and jaggery
soft shell is made from rice
flour/wheat flour mixed with maida.
Fried/steamed
steamed version-ukdiche modak eaten
hot with ghee.
