• Journal has title of article and title of journal. Only the
title of the journal is in italics
• Journal has comma after title of journal
• Journal has volume number
• Journal has issue number in brackets
• Journal has page numbers
• Journal does not have publisher or place
8. Agreement between in-text
references and list of references
• Erythropoietin is a hormone that is naturally produced by the
kidneys. It is used in sport to improve performance (Dobson
and Kell 2008). It is administered by being injected under the
skin, in order to stimulate red blood cell production. By
increasing the number of red blood cells, more oxygen can be
delivered to the muscles. This helps to delay fatigue so the
athlete can perform for a longer period of time at a greater
intensity (does not correspond with the list of references). As
the hormone causes the blood to thicken, the side effects of
erythropoietin are blood clots, heart attacks and strokes. If
erythropoietin is overused, there is a risk of the heart
stopping when the body slows down, for example when
sleeping (eMolecules 2011).
