3. When describing my target audience for my music video I will need to
consider the different aspects of an audience, such as age, gender,
hobbies etc.
The track I am using for my music video was released in the late 60s,
there for my video is most likely to appeal to ages 35+ skewed towards
men. My target audience will be interested in Jim Morrison and have an
emotional connection to the Doors. The Doors were known for their
amazing guitar solos and instrumentals, my target audience will most
likely be into guitars and musical instruments, possessing a passion
for rock music. After Jim Morrison’s (front man of the Doors), career as
a performer, he retired and continued to write poetry and other
literature texts. I feel that my target audience is very well educated and
familiar with famous poetry and literature texts. The Doors lyrics to
most of their songs present a poetic flair and deeper meanings that
people who are well educated enough will understand. They may
surround themselves in their free time with poetry and literature,
suggesting that they may be in a high paid occupation such as a
professor or printing. Other occupations may include music teachers
or musicians.
4. HERBERT BLUMER THEORIES
REGARDING AUDIENCE
Herbert Blumer described ‘mass audience’ in 1950
The mass is very loosely organised and is not able to act with
the unity of a crowd.
In the second world war, Hitler in Germany attempted to used
media as propaganda of promoting social Darwinism to mass
audiences.
Depending on the situation of an audience they ma find it hard
to access media forms. A lower and poorer audience may not
possess the technology to watch latest music videos. Or the
situation and attitude of a n audience, a young teenage girl will
not read the newspaper to find out what is going on with in
celebrity culture. I will be carrying out a questionnaire to find
out how my audience will access music videos to gain
information. But first I am going to analyse who my target
audience is.
5. My target audience will also be into other bands that were contemporary
during the time of the Doors, including Pink Floyd, The Who, Fleetwood Mac
and the Kinks. This suggests that my target audience will have a passion for
70s music and may listen to one type of genre. My music video will present
nostalgic feeling towards my audience.
Interests that my target audience may posses including films and television
shows will be targeted at the older generation. They will most likely watch
films from the 70s and 80s my target audience are well educated they will also
be interested in literature and classic poetry. Writers from history such as
Oscar Wilde and Edward Thomas may be popular with my target audience.
MEDIA GROUPING
6. OCCUPATIONS AND
HOBBIES
After Jim Morrison’s (front man of the Doors), career as a
performer, he retired and continued to write poetry and other
literature texts. There for my target audience may be well
educated and into poetry and poets. There for my audience
will find them selves in well paid occupations and/or
education such as Economics, Accountancies, Law etc.
In there spare time they will be interested in listening to 70s
music and guitars, as the Doors tracks included insane guitar
solos and were famous because of them.
7. MY VIDEO IDEA
The Doors were known for being controversial on and off
stage. My video involves controversial subjects to fit with the
theme and culture of both the song and the band. There for
my audience will understand the meaning of the video, and
will be able to discover the irony and hidden
messages/meanings of my music video, as it is based on a
social realism subject, which is current in society today.
The older generation will also be able to understand and
respect the idea of my music video, applying a mature
approach to the concept and idea of the video.
8. APPLYING DYER’S THEORY TO
MY AUDIENCE AND VIDEO
Richard Dyer states that people will respond to a message if it
offers them compensation for their inadequacies in their won
lives. As my music video includes isolated characters and
people who are rejected from society, some of my target
audience could have the inadequacy of feeling isolated and turn
to music as a way of ‘comforting’ themselves. Knowing that to
be strange is not a bad thing and should be excepted in society.
By using this idea for my music video the audience may connect
more and enjoy watching the music video.
My target audience may connect with my music video as a
sense of nostalgia. An example of a media source which
promotes nostalgia as a response is the film Spike Island. Spike
Island is about teens in the 90’s who are fans of the Stone
Roses. The film presents a nostalgic atmosphere, which will
appeal to older generations who may feel connected
emotionally.
This is Dyer’s Utopian Solutions theory.
10. YOUNGER GENERATIONS?
However it is plausible that many of the younger generations are fans of the Doors, and
still listen to their music. The Doors were a controversial band, who were very
experimental with drug use and alcohol use. It can be argued that teens and younger
generations in their 20s will listen to the Doors, to portray an individual/retro image.
Present day artists almost mimic Jim Morrison, for his style and characteristic. Younger
generations may like present day artists like Alex Turner, Hozier, and Pete Doherty, who
have most certainly taken inspiration from Jim Morrison himself. There for as the
younger generation may be interested in these type of front men they may research into
pass front men and discover Jim Morrison.
It is also apparent that the retro style and vintage culture is becoming increasingly
popular with in todays culture. Younger generations still buy Vinyl records and listen to
past artists like Joy Division and the Doors. Retail stores like Topshop and H&M sell
band t-shirts to younger generations there for this suggests that the younger
generation. My artist and video will attract the younger generations who have a passion
for 70s music. Due to the poetic flair that the Doors portray in their songs, my target
audience may be interested in poetry, literature and social realism subjects.
