Time Management and My Life
as a Student: How I Did It

(c) Home Time Management 2013 | Mary Segers http://marysegers.com
I was a student for many more years than I care to admit. That's
because it can take significantly longer than normal if you:
• Change majors a few times
• Don't always attend full-time
• Get kicked out for 2 semesters because you're pregnant and there's a
Rubiola outbreak but you can't take the Rubiola shot
• Following undergraduate graduation take a year to take graduate
classes to see what may interest you, and
• Finally decide on a graduate program in which you're a
'nontraditional student' thereby automatically earning you an extra
year in core coursework

(c) Home Time Management 2013 | Mary Segers http://marysegers.com
Yep... the years can really add up.
But, then again, so can the knowledge and
experience.
And those are two things I was great at... being a
student and learning.

(c) Home Time Management 2013 | Mary Segers http://marysegers.com
I earned my Bachelor's Degree in December 2005 with a
3.98 GPA and my Master's in December 2009 with a 3.88.
I was 39 and 43, respectively.

The only reason I point that out is because making those
grades took some serious studying and to be able to
have that time available for studying took some serious
home time management.

(c) Home Time Management 2013 | Mary Segers http://marysegers.com
During those last 6 years (I already had my first 2 years
under my belt) I alternated between only having 2 kids
at home… and they were full-time unschoolers… and
the older kids bouncing back with their families
including very little ones.
So I would have anywhere between 2-3 of my own kids
and 1 or 2 grandkids usually infants and toddlers.

That's a depiction of a nontraditional student if I ever
saw one.
(c) Home Time Management 2013 | Mary Segers http://marysegers.com
What time savers I draw on?
There were several that I either already
possessed or quickly uncovered that helped me
succeed.

(c) Home Time Management 2013 | Mary Segers http://marysegers.com
First



Having been a single parent of 4 for many years
I was already a home time management expert.
I'm talking like 10th degree apron belt here.

(c) Home Time Management 2013 | Mary Segers http://marysegers.com
Second


I had the best behaved children in the world.
Now that was a lot of work all through the years
but it was so worth it.

(c) Home Time Management 2013 | Mary Segers http://marysegers.com
Third



My children had always had chores so everything wasn't
on my shoulders.

(c) Home Time Management 2013 | Mary Segers http://marysegers.com
Fourth


I had taught the kids early to cook.
So, if I had to study I simply told them (well in advance) they
were Chef-for-such-and-such-night and they planned what
they wanted to cook including making their ingredient list
and making sure we either had what was needed or the items
were put on the weekly grocery list.
Also, we used things like leftovers and batch cooking.
(c) Home Time Management 2013 | Mary Segers http://marysegers.com
Fifth

 at first if you'll
While this may not seem a time saver

follow my reasoning you'll see it actually is a very big
one.
I really got to know myself.
I had to learn, and quickly, what worked for me and what
didn't. What pushed me forward and what held me back.
What energized me and what drained me.
(c) Home Time Management 2013 | Mary Segers http://marysegers.com
However, none of these things were overnight endeavors.
I'm sorry to tell you but all of these not only took work but they were
processes.
If you'll look up the word "process" in a thesaurus you'll see
equivalent words such as: procedure, course, development,
progression, method, practice, manner, and activity.

In other words, something that's ongoing... as in takes years and
years and years.
But, that's ok… hopefully you'll have years and years to practice.
(c) Home Time Management 2013 | Mary Segers http://marysegers.com
Recap


Just a few ways good home time management helped me to become a very successful student were:
*****I became a home time management expert
*****I trained my children to be well-behaved (and yes, it does take training)
*****I had my children do chores
*****I taught the kids to cook
*****I got to know myself
These same things will help you become a very successful student too.
