94% and data in average organization by 50%
in the last 2-3 years

The three V’s of Big Data
 Volume – the amount of data has grown
exponentially , from GB’s to EB’s
 Velocity – how fast the data is created and
needs to be managed
 Variety – ability to capture and make sense of
different kinds of data – including, structured,
semi-structured and unstructured

How is Big Data different?
 Big data is “datasets whose size is beyond the
ability of typical database software tools to
capture, store, manage, and analyse“.
 Big data technologies describe a new generation
of technologies and architectures, designed to
economically extract value from very large
volumes of a wide variety of data, by enabling
high velocity capture, discovery, and/or analysis.
 Also new job description: “data scientist”

Data as an asset
 A report by the WEF declared data a new
class of economic asset, like currency or
gold (2012)
 Brynjolfsson, Hitt, and Kim (2011) found
that firms that adopted “Data-driven
decision making” (DDD) were 5-6% more
productive than others.
 DDD potentially outperforms other
investments in technology, HR,
operations, etc.

What is Internet of Things (IoT)?
 Various definitions…
- “Idea of interconnected
everyday smart objects”
- “Internet expands into
the physical world”
- “Vast ecosystem of billions of physical objects
connected to the internet… that generate a
continuous stream of data”

The Economics of IoT and Big Data
 Traditionally companies compete by adding new
features to products… (e.g. there are several
advanced thermostats) but…
 When objects get wired-up into networks new
business models arise…
- Network Effects into play
- New Platforms emerge
- Pace of innovation: open
products allow 3rd parties
to add value!

Issues around Big Data…
 Where to store and process all these?
 Big Data technologies have come a long way – Hadoop
ecosystem (File system and computational engines: HDFS,
MapReduce; and high-level interfaces: Pig, Hive, etc.) but file
transfer and storage can still be slow and costly…
 Cloud computing vs. “Fog” computing
- Processing some data at the edge close to where it was
generated – loosing on integration and anticipated
intelligence: how to know “what we don’t know”.

IoT Ecosystem
A variety of smart objects, applications, network
operators, platforms and service providers
producing, recording, communicating and
processing sensor data!
…interconnectedness, complexity, adaptation,
coevolution… “each member ultimately shares the
fate of the network as a whole”
The need for open standards that will allow for
interoperability
Users will want to use many of them and or switch
between solutions… and carry their data with them!

 Who owns the data?
 The wrist-band I’m wearing or the chair I’m
sitting in, where does the data come from? Me
or the object?
 How do companies use these?

“Big Things”… big expectations!
 IoT a lot closer to reality than utopia but further steps need to be
taken to realize full potential
 IoT not just a tool: New business models (platforms and
networks) and big data applications to create new economies.
 Need to tackle issues with standards, privacy, security, etc. early
on.
