One billion users!!!
140.4 billion friend connections.
219 billion photos shared (265 billion photos including
all uploaded photos).
1.18 trillion "likes".
17 billion location check-ins.
62.6 million songs played 22 billion times (since
September 2011)

More numbers…
 Walmart handles 1M transactions per hour
 Google processes 24PB of data per day
 AT&T transfers 30PB of data per day
 90 trillion emails are sent per year
 World of Warcraft uses 1.3PB of storage
 Overall corporate data have increased by
94% and data in average organization by 50%
in the last 2-3 years
Source: Forrester
Warwick Business School
The three V’s of Big Data
 Volume – the amount of data has grown
exponentially , from GB’s to EB’s
 Velocity – how fast the data is created and
needs to be managed
 Variety – ability to capture and make sense of
different kinds of data – including, structured,
semi-structured and unstructured
Warwick Business School
How is Big Data different?
 Big data is “datasets whose size is beyond the
ability of typical database software tools to
capture, store, manage, and analyse“.
 Big data technologies describe a new generation
of technologies and architectures, designed to
economically extract value from very large
volumes of a wide variety of data, by enabling
high velocity capture, discovery, and/or analysis.
 Also new job description: “data scientist”
Warwick Business School
Data as an asset
 A report by the WEF declared data a new
class of economic asset, like currency or
gold (2012)
 Brynjolfsson, Hitt, and Kim (2011) found
that firms that adopted “Data-driven
decision making” (DDD) were 5-6% more
productive than others.
 DDD potentially outperforms other
investments in technology, HR,
operations, etc.
Warwick Business School
What is Internet of Things (IoT)?
 Various definitions…
- “Idea of interconnected
everyday smart objects”
- “Internet expands into
the physical world”
- “Vast ecosystem of billions of physical objects
connected to the internet… that generate a
continuous stream of data”
Warwick Business School
Warwick Business School
Some basic properties for smart objects
Identity
Communicate
Senses
Control
A “Thing”:
physical and
virtual attributes
Warwick Business School
Nest Labs
Co-founded by former
Apple engineers in
2010
Acquired by Google
in 2014 for $3.2
Billion
Price tag to prove
the potential of
internet connected
smart objects!
Selling a “Thing”
for $249 is good
business… when
you sell 100,000 a
month!
Warwick Business School
- Turns itself down when
you’re away.
- Programs itself so you don’t
have to.
- Helps you save energy.
- Control it from anywhere.
“Once inside the home, Nest starts its
real work: gathering data”
…motion detectors; sensors
for temperature, humidity, and
light; and algorithms that
learn…
Warwick Business School
“Data is just the start"
 Austin Energy, a municipal utility, is
paying Nest to remotely turn down
people’s air conditioners in order to
conserve power on hot summer
days!
 Rush Hour Rewards Programme –
get paid $85 and help utilities avoid
outages (and huge costs)…
Warwick Business School
The Economics of IoT and Big Data
 Traditionally companies compete by adding new
features to products… (e.g. there are several
advanced thermostats) but…
 When objects get wired-up into networks new
business models arise…
- Network Effects into play
- New Platforms emerge
- Pace of innovation: open
products allow 3rd parties
to add value!
Warwick Business School
Issues around Big Data…
 Where to store and process all these?
 Big Data technologies have come a long way – Hadoop
ecosystem (File system and computational engines: HDFS,
MapReduce; and high-level interfaces: Pig, Hive, etc.) but file
transfer and storage can still be slow and costly…
 Cloud computing vs. “Fog” computing
- Processing some data at the edge close to where it was
generated – loosing on integration and anticipated
intelligence: how to know “what we don’t know”.
Warwick Business School
IoT Ecosystem
A variety of smart objects, applications, network
operators, platforms and service providers
producing, recording, communicating and
processing sensor data!
…interconnectedness, complexity, adaptation,
coevolution… “each member ultimately shares the
fate of the network as a whole”
The need for open standards that will allow for
interoperability
Users will want to use many of them and or switch
between solutions… and carry their data with them!
Warwick Business School
Warwick Business School
Privacy of Big Data and IoT
 Who owns the data?
 The wrist-band I’m wearing or the chair I’m
sitting in, where does the data come from? Me
or the object?
 How do companies use these?
Transparency?
Warwick Business School
Privacy… we know they know
Warwick Business School
Privacy… we don’t know they know
Warwick Business School
Privacy… “collective blindness”
Our data will be accessible to
almost everyone and we’ll be
OK (as if there were no issue)!
Warwick Business School
Security implications…
 IoT devices can be
Data-stealing spies…
 “Breaking the Nest”?
 A compromised Nest
can:
- tell when you’re or
on holidays
- many of your habits…
- gate to any other
connected devices…
Warwick Business School
Security implications…
 Nest is a good scenario!
 A lot of people are not aware of the risks (PC
and mobile devices were pretty much
contained)
 Should be the responsibility of companies to
educate the public for imminent threats.
IoT search engine that looks for “things” instead
of Web pages…
Warwick Business School
Shodan search results…
Searched under
“live cam” and found:

Warwick Business School

Warwick Business School
“Big Things”… big expectations!
 IoT a lot closer to reality than utopia but further steps need to be
taken to realize full potential
 IoT not just a tool: New business models (platforms and
networks) and big data applications to create new economies.
 Need to tackle issues with standards, privacy, security, etc. early
on.

  • 11. Warwick Business School Markos Zachariadis, B.Sc. Hons (Econ), M.Sc., Ph.D. (LSE) Assistant Professor in Management & Information Systems
  • 12. Warwick Business School “Data, data everywhere” 1 Exabyte (EB) = 1,000,000,000 Gigabytes (GB)
  • 13. Warwick Business School The age of “Big Data” 0 250 500 750 1000 Dec 04 Apr 07 Jan 09 Jul 09 Feb 10 Jan 11 Sep 11 Oct 12 Facebookusersin millions One billion users!!! 140.4 billion friend connections. 219 billion photos shared (265 billion photos including all uploaded photos). 1.18 trillion "likes". 17 billion location check-ins. 62.6 million songs played 22 billion times (since September 2011)
  • 14. Warwick Business School More numbers…  Walmart handles 1M transactions per hour  Google processes 24PB of data per day  AT&T transfers 30PB of data per day  90 trillion emails are sent per year  World of Warcraft uses 1.3PB of storage  Overall corporate data have increased by 94% and data in average organization by 50% in the last 2-3 years Source: Forrester
  • 15. Warwick Business School The three V’s of Big Data  Volume – the amount of data has grown exponentially , from GB’s to EB’s  Velocity – how fast the data is created and needs to be managed  Variety – ability to capture and make sense of different kinds of data – including, structured, semi-structured and unstructured
  • 16. Warwick Business School How is Big Data different?  Big data is “datasets whose size is beyond the ability of typical database software tools to capture, store, manage, and analyse“.  Big data technologies describe a new generation of technologies and architectures, designed to economically extract value from very large volumes of a wide variety of data, by enabling high velocity capture, discovery, and/or analysis.  Also new job description: “data scientist”
  • 17. Warwick Business School Data as an asset  A report by the WEF declared data a new class of economic asset, like currency or gold (2012)  Brynjolfsson, Hitt, and Kim (2011) found that firms that adopted “Data-driven decision making” (DDD) were 5-6% more productive than others.  DDD potentially outperforms other investments in technology, HR, operations, etc.
  • 18. Warwick Business School What is Internet of Things (IoT)?  Various definitions… - “Idea of interconnected everyday smart objects” - “Internet expands into the physical world” - “Vast ecosystem of billions of physical objects connected to the internet… that generate a continuous stream of data”
  • 20. Warwick Business School Some basic properties for smart objects Identity Communicate Senses Control A “Thing”: physical and virtual attributes
  • 21. Warwick Business School Nest Labs Co-founded by former Apple engineers in 2010 Acquired by Google in 2014 for $3.2 Billion Price tag to prove the potential of internet connected smart objects! Selling a “Thing” for $249 is good business… when you sell 100,000 a month!
  • 22. Warwick Business School - Turns itself down when you’re away. - Programs itself so you don’t have to. - Helps you save energy. - Control it from anywhere. “Once inside the home, Nest starts its real work: gathering data” …motion detectors; sensors for temperature, humidity, and light; and algorithms that learn…
  • 23. Warwick Business School “Data is just the start"  Austin Energy, a municipal utility, is paying Nest to remotely turn down people’s air conditioners in order to conserve power on hot summer days!  Rush Hour Rewards Programme – get paid $85 and help utilities avoid outages (and huge costs)…
  • 24. Warwick Business School The Economics of IoT and Big Data  Traditionally companies compete by adding new features to products… (e.g. there are several advanced thermostats) but…  When objects get wired-up into networks new business models arise… - Network Effects into play - New Platforms emerge - Pace of innovation: open products allow 3rd parties to add value!
  • 25. Warwick Business School Issues around Big Data…  Where to store and process all these?  Big Data technologies have come a long way – Hadoop ecosystem (File system and computational engines: HDFS, MapReduce; and high-level interfaces: Pig, Hive, etc.) but file transfer and storage can still be slow and costly…  Cloud computing vs. “Fog” computing - Processing some data at the edge close to where it was generated – loosing on integration and anticipated intelligence: how to know “what we don’t know”.
  • 26. Warwick Business School IoT Ecosystem A variety of smart objects, applications, network operators, platforms and service providers producing, recording, communicating and processing sensor data! …interconnectedness, complexity, adaptation, coevolution… “each member ultimately shares the fate of the network as a whole” The need for open standards that will allow for interoperability Users will want to use many of them and or switch between solutions… and carry their data with them!
  • 28. Warwick Business School Privacy of Big Data and IoT  Who owns the data?  The wrist-band I’m wearing or the chair I’m sitting in, where does the data come from? Me or the object?  How do companies use these? Transparency?
  • 30. Warwick Business School Privacy… we don’t know they know
  • 31. Warwick Business School Privacy… “collective blindness” Our data will be accessible to almost everyone and we’ll be OK (as if there were no issue)!
  • 32. Warwick Business School Security implications…  IoT devices can be Data-stealing spies…  “Breaking the Nest”?  A compromised Nest can: - tell when you’re or on holidays - many of your habits… - gate to any other connected devices…
  • 33.
