C. Lincoln  won the election,  taking every Northern state.   Breckinridge swept the South, and Bell took most border states, those states located between the North and the South.  II.  The Election of 1860
D. What Was Lincoln’s Platform Regarding Slavery?   2. Lincoln  did not propose to ban slavery. 3. He  felt  that  slavery was morally wrong. 4.  He thought that  slavery should stay where it was already, but make it illegal in the territories .  ,[object Object],[object Object]

Cause # 5:  Secession
 
A. By February 1861,  Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, and Georgia  had seceded.  B. Formed a new nation: the  Confederate States of America, or the Confederacy.  C.  Jefferson Davis   chosen as President. D.  Alexander Stephens ,  from Georgia , was chosen as  Vice President.  IV.  The South Secedes
V. Causes for Secession ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]
A. Confederate forces  had seized some U.S. forts and demanded the surrender of  Fort Sumter ,  a fort on an island guarding Charleston Harbor.  B. Lincoln responded to the Confederate forces’ demand by  sending unarmed Union forces with supplies to Fort Sumter.  He promised  Union forces would not fire unless fired upon. VI. Fort Sumter
C. Confederate president Jefferson Davis ordered forces to attack Fort Sumter on  April 12, 1861. D. The fort’s Union troops  surrendered on April 14th to Confederate forces. VI. Fort Sumter
