2. Mouth
The mouth consists of the teeth, saliva glands, and
the tongue. The teeth chew the food breaking it down,
while this happens, the saliva moisturizes the food
making it easier to swallow.
Fun Fact: The uvula separates the windpipe from
the esophagus so that you can breathe while you
swallow food.
3. Esophagus
The esophagus is a muscle that pushes food into
your stomach.
Fun Fact: The esophagus pushes the food down,
so if you where in space, you could still swallow
properly.
4. Stomach
The stomach produces hydrochloric acid which begins
the process of digestion. The stomach also consists of
acid and enzymes that breaks the food down so it
seems like a liquid soup.
Fun Fact: Drinking water helps the stomach work
properly, since without it, it would not work properly.
5. Step 3 b. Liver
The liver produces bile which helps the stomach break
down fats. The liver helps to regulate sugar in your
blood, stores vitamins, and breaks down dangerous
substances.
Fun Fact: Biggest organ in the body.
6. Step 3 c. Pancreas
Produces pancreas juice which helps break down
carbohydrates and proteins.
Fun Fact: The pancreas produces hormones that go
into the blood which then carries these hormones to
different parts of the body which perform some of the
most vital function of the body.
7. Small Intestine
The small intestine moves the food through the body
connecting to the large intestine. While the food
passes by, the villi drain nutrients from the food and
send it to the bloodstream. There, the bloodstream
takes it around the body.
Fun Fact: The small intestine is about 20 feet long.
8. Large Intestine/ Colon
The food dries up and breaks down in the large
intestine, and the bacteria inside feasts on the solid
waste, and breaks it down further. Sometimes the
bacteria causes you to fart.
Fun Fact: The walls of the large intestine absorb the
last remaining nutrients and water from the poop.
