Mudslides are slow moving destructive masses of mud that come down slopes, killing 25 to 50 people annually. They start on steep slopes and rapidly move with water and debris, damaging roadways, railways, and utility lines, which can endanger motorists and result in injury or illness. To increase safety, walls should be built and proper drainage put in place on slopes prone to mudslides.
