3. Baroque Characteristics The Baroque style first arose in Rome in the 17th century and spread throughout Europe. Although highly known for it’s realism , Baroque is very abstract due to it’s religious themes. The aristocracy also saw the dramatic style of Baroque architecture and art as a means of impressing visitors and expressing triumphant power and control. Baroque uses motion and interpreted detail to produce drama and exuberance.
