The document discusses the metadata elements and backend tools used for the EUscreen project. It describes the 39 metadata elements, including 18 mandatory elements based on the EBUcore schema. It also outlines the mapping tool used to map provider metadata to the EUscreen schema, the annotation tool for adding additional metadata, and the ingestion workflow for submitting and storing metadata.

11. Back-end tools UPs
• Syntactic and Semantic interoperability is achieved by
using a common schema fully mappable to EBUcore.
• Centralised approach in order to monitor progresses
and quality, as well as facilitate the involvement of
content providers in all ingestion phases.
• User friendly web tools that facilitate harvesting,
mapping, normalising and revising of metadata
• Metadata publishing to EUScreen portal and to

12. Metadata submission
• Metadata are submitted using:
• HTTP upload/download
• FTP upload/download
• OAI-PMH
• Metadata is stored in XML

14. Mapping tool
• Maps via a GUI providers’ elements to the
EUscreen elements.
• Transforms and stores metadata automatically
in EBUcore format.
• Stores mapping transformations, to allow re-
editing at any point, if necessary.
• Supports value concatenation (many-to-one
mappings), string manipulation and conditional
mappings.
• Exports metadata in EBUcore and EDM 5.x and

provides the respective XSL.

24. Annotation tool
• This module enables the addition of data that
are not in the original metadata (e.g empty
fields, fields that take values from EUscreen
thesaurus).
• The revision happens on item or group level.
(i.e. item level edit to add English description to
an item, group level edit to add topic to a group
of items in a provider’s dataset).

Hinweis der Redaktion
This is a kind of standard disclaimer!!
- Thesaurus terms are based on IPTC thesaurus, the same we used also in VideoActive.
- Topics are the ones Rob spoke about, and allow us to contextualise and classify our content.

- Original URI: which is the unique internet address of the item at the content provider’s web site. This is a field Europeana is using in its schema, and it gives visibility to the CP on-line archive.
- Relation and Relation type are used to build connections between items in the EUscreen repository. For example clips coming form the same programme, different news stories coming from the same news programme issue. But also items that refer or include part of other items.

Mapping tool allows
- batch upload of metadata content in xml format
- schema mapping (I will show you some details iaw)
- quality control of imported data (missing values, malformed data, etc.) and statistics (items imported, number of references for specific values, etc.)
- allows also the possibility to preview uploaded items as it will appear in the Europeana website
Which are the strong points of these tools:
syntactic and semantic interoperability using a common schema
....
one botton publishing to the EUscreen portal and seamless publishing of the data to Europeana through a OAI-PMH interface.
the mapping tool will
- map using a graphical web interface native elements form the CP source shema to the EUscreen elements
- ....
- the mapping can be quite advanced, not only elements matching, but also value concatenation, string manipulation and conditional mappings
- ...
On the right side I have my source schema inferred by the submitted xml. On the right side I have the EUscreen schema.
clicking on a element from the source schema, I can obtain the following information:
- The XML namespace to which this element belongs
- The number of times the XPath of this element exists in the imported dataset.
- The number of unique values associated with this XPath in the imported dataset
- A sample of these values sorted by their frequency of appearance in the imported dataset
