Shank is an action film for the youth
generation, set in a decaying future
London. A gang set out on a chase to
avenge the murder of one of their
own.
Visually the whole poster contrasts a
dark theme as the lighting it set to a
low key. This dark theme represents
a dangerous feel to the poster. The
costumes worn by the 6 actors are quite rough and informal encouraging that this is an
action drama film. Expressions from the 6 actors are performing a distressed uncomfortable
situation representing a dilemma they're currently facing. It can also mean London 2015 is a
dangerous place to be in the future. The word "Shank" which in UK slang means "Stab" with
the words in red express a situation of danger elaborating the fact why the background of
youths are wearing hoodies and covering their identity with bandanas. As black people are
often represented and stereotyped by the media for committing dangerous acts such as
robbery, violence and extortion.

This is the first intertitle shown in the
Trailer - Shank. Intertitles are designed
to give the audience minimal
information about the events in
trailers to indulge the audience to buy
the film. Arguably in this intertitle it
states: "From the distributor that brought you KiDULTHOOD" I honestly didn't know what this
meant. I thought to ask the director and executive producers the relevance of this - why not
"the producer, director, maker of KiDULTHOOD?" Do audience really care about who
distributed KiDULTHOOD? They want to watch the trailer. But judging from imDB critics, they
said this intertitle pushed them to go see the film because they knew KiDULTHOOD was a
really good film. The use of KiDULTHOOD being larger than the above font can indicate to
audiences the institution who distributed the predecessor of this successful film can push
sales. The crisp clear formatting of the words with grungy black colours within the text and
background demonstrate a theme of unhappiness and dangerous accusations. This can also
represent poverty and London 2015 as a recession-based movie. The uncleanliness of the
grungy background can also adhere to characters representation of a nasty-nature within
the film.

This was the ending shot for Shank.
The punch leading towards the camera
stopped the non-diegetic and diegetic
music as the last intertitle was
introduced - this shows us that the
suspense and tension has stopped.
The effect of this makes the audience
want to watch the film as there is a storage of excitement stopping at the end. The speed of
the actor and shot also encouraged the pace of the music. With the handheld shaky camera
movement with the actor expressing an angry distressed face leading a fist towards the
camera represents a state of struggle and insecurity. This also increases the storyline of a
poor London-recession based city.

The sound was extremely important in this trailer as it was the key of the successful weekend
sales. The suspense was maintained throughout the film keeping the audience on their knees
with the change in music from high to low then to high with the addition of the grungy
intertitles making it combine into a professional trailer.
I will be using this similar technique in our trailer as this fits into our idea. The suspense and
the decided plot of our trailer follows a similar resemblance of the way this trailer runs.
