Take out your script from last night, and do a close reading of Friar
Lawrence’s speech at the beginning of Scene 3 (lines 1­30),
similar to the close readings that we have been doing in class.
What kinds of images does the Friar use? What is the effect of
these images? How do they relate to the themes of the play?

In the last class, you examined the famous balcony scene from Romeo
and Juliet. In today's class, we will continue to study the language of
the play as we look at the remainder of Act 2.

2. Turn to a partner and discuss your annotations. Did your
partner find anything in the text that you missed? Did you
interpret anything differently?

2. Identify three examples of imagery in your group’s lines
and discuss the impacts these images have on the audience
or their relation to the themes of the play.
3. Identify one line that their group thinks is most important
and be prepared to defend their choice.
