Conference helps parents 'make a
difference in literacy and beyond'
The Peel District School Board is hosting its eighth annual parent literacy conference on April 4 at
Sandalwood Heights Secondary School in Brampton. The conference, Make a difference in literacy
and beyond – practical ways parents can boost learning, features sessions by leading experts who
will provide helpful tips and ideas.
This year's keynote speaker is Joe Rich, a guest therapist on the TV show CityLine. Rich will share
his insights as a social worker for 25 years in his keynote: Parenting: The Long Journey.
Workshops for parents of children in kindergarten to grade 5 include: building literacy with storytel-
ling, making science fun, helping your child succeed in math, building self esteem, developing
strong social skills and helping your family cope with stress. Sessions for parents of middle school
students discuss how to: develop good study skills, build strong literacy skills through the arts and
help your teen make a successful transition to high school.
This free learning event includes lunch and is open to Peel board parents of students at all grade
levels. Parents, this is your chance to learn practical ways to boost learning.
Take one day to:
• experience a powerful keynote presentation
• learn from Peel educators recognized throughout Ontario as experts in literacy
• explore valuable exhibitors representing community organizations, regional services and educa-
tional products and browse publisher displays of children's' books and educational resources
Register for this free conference by March 13, 2009!
Conference and registration information is available in the quot;Spotlightquot; section of the board's web
site, www.peelschools.org.

Cyberproofing – protect your teen on the
Internet
Peel Regional Police want to remind parents that cyberproofing is a safe
practice. Through education, teens will learn the necessary skills to help keep
them safe on the Internet.
Cyberproofing techniques can be used by your teen at home. Here are a few guidelines from
Peel Police that may assist you and your teen:
Maintain open lines of communication with your teen.
•
Tell your teen to never, under any circumstances, reveal personal information online.
•
Remind your teen to never agree to meet in person, an individual met on the Internet.
•
Teach your teen to stop immediately if they see or read anything that upsets them.
•
Restrict access to the Internet when there is no supervision available.
•
Be sensitive to the actions of your teen on the Internet.
•
Monitor your long distance telephone bills for unknown telephone numbers.
•
Select a family-friendly Internet service provider. Before subscribing, ask:
•
- if they have programs in place to block obscene material
- if they maintain a list of recommended internet sites that are family-friendly
- what actions they take towards individuals who act inappropriately through their service
• Acquire software to assist in protection from the Internet.
• Take a course on the use of the Internet or have your teen teach you. Make this a family activity.
Keeping children safe during the spring thaw
Now that winter's heavy snowfall has begun to melt away it's important
that children be aware of the dangers of playing near waterways and
storm sewers.
Rising and fast moving water in lakes, ponds and creeks is increasingly
likely as temperatures continue to rise and the forecast of rain spurs on
the spring thaw. The City of Brampton has provided the following
information to help keep children safe:
water flows in storm sewers and watercourses are unpredictable and
•
may change quickly
• toxic gases may be present in and around storm sewers and watercourses
• access is restricted, making rescue attempts difficult
• tragic falls could take place
Parents are encouraged to review this information with their children and let them
know how dangerous storms sewers and waterways are.
