Everyone had a wonderful time on Friday night and Saturday morning at the Relay, even though no one got any
sleep. Williams Parkway was converted into tent city after all the fun events. There was food all night and then we
took a spin around the track around midnight to read all the luminary bags which brightly burned their messages for
all to see.
Mrs. Lazare wishes to thank many people for the success of this event. First of all, to those parents who volunteered
their time tirelessly. Most notable here is Shaila Kibria, mother of Junayd Ali, who was on board right from the
beginning. She is the parent who was able to bring us that excellent pasta meal, courtesy of a wonderful restaurant
called Karamia. Mr. Salman Shaikh and his chef set up their delicious food, buffet style, for all to enjoy. I wish to
thank him for his generous donation to such a wonderful cause as Relay for Life. I also wish to thank Lydia
Robertson who baked a beautiful cake for all the Survivors to enjoy. Mrs. Empedrad, Destiny's mother, not only
contributed a number of hours selling tickets for drinks and barbeque, but even stayed the night. I also wish to thank
Barbara Bimm, Mom to Ayrdrie, and Victoria Bimm, for their efforts.Mr. Patel, father of Jasmin, donated the sweets
on the buffet table. Also, Michelle Cain, co-op student and ex-Williams Pkwy student, along with Alex Colquhoun
and other ex-Williams Pkwy students such as Chelsey McDowall, Cherise Taylor, Kelsey Psaila, Wishah Khalid,
and Sarah Ali, were full-night volunteers.
We were also the testing ground for a new granola bar which is not even yet on the market, and uses all Ontario
ingredients, called the Go Ontario Bars, were generously donated to us.
We enjoyed the entertainment by singer/guitarist, Karl Widmeyer. He already has a CD out and will happily sell
them for $5, since some requests were indeed made.
Mrs. Lazare also wishes to thank teachers, Mr. Peet, Mr. Metelnick, Ms. Harper, Mrs. Onizuka, Mrs. Baraniecka,
Mrs. Foskett, Ms. Zimmermann, and Mrs. Branov, and also Mr. White, for their help. An extra big thank you goes
to Mrs. Beams and Mr. Banerjee who both made the ultimate sacrifice and spent the night.

For parents looking for summer child care information, help is just a phone call away.
Child Care Information Peel is a free telephone information service staffed by early
childhood educators and information and referral specialists. Callers can request
information about summer child care options in their local community and throughout
Peel Region.
Available information includes listings of licensed child care centres, home child care
agencies, before and after-school programs, playschools, Ontario Early Years Centres
and other community resources for parents and children.
This free service is available Monday to Thursday: 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Fridays: 9 a.m.
to 5 p.m. by the phone, Early Years website or by mail.

Quebec City 2009
Our Quebec City trip is quickly approaching and Mr. Lang, Ms. Zimmermann and Ms. Johnson are
looking forward to an action packed week!!! However, before the fun begins, Parents, please look
out for an information package that will include our itinerary, meals and a packing list. This infor-
mation will be sent home soon and information in the package should be returned by June 10th to
ensure a smooth trip.

Peel schools convenient venue for variety of activities
Did you know that the Peel board's 235 schools are available for community use?
Gymnasiums, classrooms, theatres and cafeterias in board schools are available to rent by non-profit, community
and corporate groups for a variety of functions. Current users of Peel board schools include youth and adult sports
teams, boys and girls clubs, cultural groups and support groups.

co-ordinator Elaine McLean. quot;We encourage individuals and groups to think of our facilities when they plan an
event or have an idea for a function but don't know where to hold it.quot;
Facilities are available during the school year on weekdays from 6 to 10 p.m. and on weekends.
Fees vary depending on the day of usage, the facility requested and type of activity. The Facilities Rentals depart-
ment receives funding from the Ministry of Education to offset the actual costs of renting these spaces.

of Schools link. In August, the school booking system will go online, allowing users to apply for permits electroni-

Suggested goals:
Bolster core learning skills
• Encourage your child to keep a diary or journal of individual or family activities.
• Take time each day for the whole family to read by themselves or together. Even 10 or 15 minutes is fine.
• Introduce children to the library's summer reading program.
• Encourage your son to follow a favourite newspaper comic strip all summer.
• Have your daughter write letters or send postcards to cousins, grandparents and friends.
Get close to nature
• Give your daughter a garden plot in the yard, a window box or a planter. Ensure your child assumes full respon-
sibility for the plants.
• Read the daily newspaper's weather map. Let your child figure out what the weather is like where friends and
relatives live.
• Camp out for a night in your backyard or at a provincial campground.
Develop a sense of responsibility
• Ask your daughter to take charge of family recycling (get containers, wash the jars, stack the papers, etc.)
• Teach your son how to take care of his clothes, sort and fold laundry, use the washer and dryer or help at the
laundromat.
• Encourage your child to plan a party. She can help decide on the guests, phone or send invitations, plan the food,
get the house ready, greet and introduce the guests, and clean up.
Get organized
• Encourage your son to start a collection—rocks, stamps, baseball cards, bottle caps, marbles. Ask him to arrange
them by categories, colour, or alphabetically.
• Ask your daughter to organize photographs in an album by date or activity.
• Suggest swapping paperbacks, comics, or magazines with family and friends.
The Peel District School Board’s We Welcome the World Centres located in Brampton, Malton and Mississauga, are
the first point of contact for all newcomer families to become familiar with the educational system in Peel.
In addition to providing literacy and numeracy assessments, We Welcome the World Centres provide newcomers
with a host of services including: reception, orientation, interpretation and referrals.
At each centre parents/guardians and students will discover:
computer portals—guided introduction to the Peel Welcome to School Kits and other Peel resources
settlement service information
translation of materials to support the reception and assessment process
age and grade appropriate educational and related program resources
audio-visual materials to explain the adult education program
professionally administered child-care (only available during assessment and orientation process)
