Providing a program focus on design and technology for ce
1. Providing a program focus on
Design and Technology
Implications for the students, the instructors
and the community
2. Program Objective
Objective: Increase the understanding of
technology among older adults using
students to design and deliver learning
materials.
3. Why Continuing Education?
We are specialists in education
We are trained in teaching the older learner
Our potential products are superior to most
of the options available for older adult
learning, as we cater to the needs of the
older adult
We have turned the tide as a
department, and are looking for innovation
in our program which encourages brain
healthy behavior.
4. Program design
We would offer training through CE
Students work in teams of 4 – 6
people, under close supervision of CE
instructor, determine topic, learning
objectives and method of delivery, finally
developing learning materials for older
adults which are relevant, engaging and
educational.
Topics would be those which help older
adults to use technology to communicate
with family and in the community.
5. Qualities of instruction
Designed for adult learners
Delivered in chunks to conserve working
memory
Information taught as needed (i.e. not all
things at once)
Slow, clear instruction with practice
Project based learning most effective
Team approach insures maximum
participation
6. Rationale
Alone, we are limited by time and
resources.
With a team, we can use the strengths of
the team.
This would allow students to specialize in a
particular aspect of instructional
design, making design more efficient and
effective.
As students become more proficient, they
can help with additional instructional design
7. Potential rewards
Students develop skills which may be useful
in gaining occupation, paid or unpaid
Materials created can be taught within the
community, or using online methods
Students can teach materials in small
groups such as libraries and community
centers
Develop a pool of students who are willing
to help at technology events and other
tutoring experiences.
8. Part of a bigger picture
This training is part of The Ambassador
Corp Program, a project which is a
collaboration among members of the
Technology Coalition Steering
Committee, developed to improve computer
literacy within the older adult community.
Continuing Education is part of this
committee, as is AIS, San Diego Futures
Foundation, Aldea@Home, and other
companies focused on the older adult.
9. Program design
Offer class as a distance learning class
Allow for enrollment anytime
Require a 50 hour commitment
Include face to face, virtual and
independent learning
Project based (team will develop materials)
Teams can be set up by students, or by
instructor
Include students from around county
