                                 known as “redcoats”

By the 1700’s, Britain had 13 colonies on the east coast of North America. The
British government ruled its colonies with strict laws, and made the colonists pay
more taxes than people in Britain. Many colonists thought that this was unfair, and
riots broke out.

One very unpopular tax made it extremely expensive to buy tea in America. In 1773,

colonists climbed on board ships delivering tea to the port of Boston and threw all the
tea into the sea. This famous protest is known as the Boston Tea Party. The British
government punished the colonists with even stricter laws, and moved a large army into
North America. Fighting soon broke out between the colonists and the British.

The colonists began to think of themselves as Americans and wanted to break
free from Britain. In 1776, the leaders of all 12 colonies signed a statement called the
Declaration of Independence.

The British didn’t want to lose control of their North American land, and they
fought hard against the new American army. Although the Americans had a strong
leader, named George Washington, the British soldiers were better trained and more

the British surrendered after a long battle at Yorktown, and the war was over.

Soon after the war, Britain signed a peace treaty and accepted the United States
as an independent country. In 1787, a group of American lawyers and politicians wrote a
      independent
set of laws for the new country. These laws are known as the American Constitution. In
1789, George Washington was elected the first President of the USA.

                                 THE FRENCH REVOLUTION.

By the 1780s, many French people were angry with their
ruler, King Louis XVI, and the way he ran the country.
Although the French government was running out of
money, the king’s nobles still led a luxurious life and paid no
taxes. Meanwhile, the peasants and workers had to pay high taxes,

By 1789, the government had no money left at all, and France was in a
desperate situation. In order to solve the country’s problems, the king was forced to

almost 200 years. Some of those who came to the meeting of the Estates General
were middle-class people, such as merchants and lawyers. Unlike the nobles, the

middle classes had to pay taxes. They demanded that everyone should pay fair
taxes, but the king refused. This made many French people furious.

On July 14, 1789, a crowd of poor people, helped by some of the king’s soldiers,

that the Bastille had been captured encouraged many other people to rebel, and a
revolution soon broke out over France. The middle classes took control of the

country, and in 1793 the king was executed.
The revolution quickly became very violent. The queen was
executed, as well as thousands of nobles, and anyone else who was
thought to be against the revolution. This frightening period became

The revolutionaries promised to help people in other nations to rebel against
their rulers, and France began to invade nearby countries. Many European rulers

were worried and wanted to stop the revolution. In 1793, several countries, such as
Britain and Austria, attacked France and war began. By 1795, the French had
defeated most of their enemies and won new land in Europe

                       THE EMPIRE OF NAPOLEON

During the wars that followed the French Revolution, a
brilliant young general named Napoleon Bonaparte won many
battles for the French army. Napoleon became popular and
                   powerful,
powerful, and in 1799 he seized control of France. Napoleon made
many new laws, giving everyone in France the right to own land and
to find good job. However, he was also an extremely strict ruler
who wanted as much power for himself as possible

                                     Napoleon
In 1804, Napoleon made himself Emperor of France. His
army won a series of spectacular victories and by 1812 he
had conquered most of Western Europe. Napoleon ruled from
Paris, and put his relatives in charge of parts of his empire

One country that Napoleon failed to take over was Britain. Britain was hard to
invade because it had a powerful navy. In 1805, British ships defeated the French
navy just off Cape Trafalgar, in southern Spain. In 1808 Napoleon invaded Spain and,
                                           battles,
in 1812, he invaded Russia. He won several battles, then marched his men into
Moscow. But Russian soldiers had set fire to the city and taken away all the food.
Napoleon’s army was forced to leave Moscow and march all the way back to France
through the freezing winter snow. Thousand of men died, and Napoleon’s attempt to

When Napoleon’s invasion of Russia failed, many European countries joined
together against him. His army lost several big battles, and in 1814 he was captured
                                    captured,
and imprisoned. A year after he was captured, Napoleon escaped and took control of
France once more. However, after only a hundred days in charge, he was finally
defeated by the British and the Prussians at the Battle of Waterloo. Napoleon was
sent to live on the tiny island of St Helena in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. He

                        REVOLUTIONS
                        REVOLUTIONS IN SOUTH AMERICA

Since the 16th century, Spain and Portugal had owned vast colonies in South
America. The colonies were ruled by a few rich landowners, but most South
Americans were poor. By the 1800’s, many South Americans wanted to break free
from their foreign rulers and form their own nations. Portugal allowed Brazil to
become a separate country in 1833, but the Spanish were determined to keep
                                               Spanish
control of their land. This meant that all the Spanish colonies had to fight for their
independence.

The most famous South American rebel leader
was Simon Bolivar, from the northern colony of
                                           Venezuela. Bolivar became commander of
Venezuela’s rebel army in 1811, and fought the
Spanish for three years, before being defeated.
Bolivar realized he couldn’t beat the huge
Spanish army in Venezuela, so he planned a
surprise attack on the nearby colony of New

and into New Granada. There, he defeated the
    independence with Bolivar’s soldiers

   Colombia.
as Colombia. Bolivar spent the next few years moving around South America, fighting

Venezuela, and the next year he drove the Spanish out of Ecuador. In 1824, Bolivar

drove the Spanish from the rest of Peru. He then made part of Peru into a new
nation, which was named Bolivia after him.

                                     José
Another great rebel leader was José de San Martin. He led Argentina to
independence and helped to free Chile. By 1830, all of the South American colonies
had become independent. However, in the years that followed, many wars broke out
                                                   people
between the new nations, and life remained had for people of South America.
