FROM ROTTERDAM CENTER TO GOOD CITY LIFE An Urban Regeneration Strategy

function, a dominance of motor traffic and a low residential density within
the boundaries of the city center. The basis plan from 1946 approached
a centre, design by modernistic planning ideas.

Through the 1970s, the city was rebuilt. It remained quite windy and
open. From 1980s the city councils began to develop an active archi-
tectural policy. New styles of apartments, office buildings and recreation
facilities resulted in new city centre with a modern skyline. In the 1990s,
a business centre on the south bank of the river, the Kop van Zuid was
built.

Till today Rotterdam is in a process of development and transformation
its urban structure, often disregarding the sustainability of the urban en-
vironment or the quality of the street level. Planning and developments
of the past affected the public life of the city user. Rules of post-war
transformation have reduced the complexity and the connectivity in the
center. These aspects resulted into a constant transformation of the ur-
ban structure rather than a coherent city form.

Westpolder Dorp is a design for a new central zone of
the housing estate of Westpolder. It consists of some
one hundred apartments, a supermarket and other com-
mercial functions, and public facilities such as a care
centre, a kindergarten and a social services centre. The
location is close to a future Randstadrail station. The
main theme of the master plan is “village architecture”.
The design defines a balance between residence, ame-
nities and public space. The functional programme is
distributed over six volumes of village-like proportions,
which huddle close together with small, intimate open
spaces between them. Each of these “houses” contains
apartments combined with facilities specific to a village
centre. This results in characteristic building shapes
with distinct identities: the supply barn, the care yard,
the play house, the market hall, the music chapel and
the sports gym. The sloping, stepped facades yield spa-
cious loggias and balconies for the apartments. The en-

MAKE THE BORDER your territory! Recreation of the borderline between Poland & Germany on the baltic island Usedom
Studies: Bachelor-Thesis, 2005

By the join of Poland into the European Union relation between the polish and german parts of the island Usedom will longterm change.
The history, the geographical situation, the Polish-German relation and the nature of the island qualify this place for a symbol.
The needs, wishes and also fears of the affected population have to be investigated in particular.
Destination is to find a communicative interface.

The basis plan from 1946 approached a centre, design by modernistic planning ideas. Through the 1970s, the city was rebuilt. It remained quite windy and open. From 1980s the city councils began to develop an active archi- tectural policy. New styles of apartments, office buildings and recreation facilities resulted in new city centre with a modern skyline. In the 1990s, a business centre on the south bank of the river, the Kop van Zuid was built. Till today Rotterdam is in a process of development and transformation its urban structure, often disregarding the sustainability of the urban en- vironment or the quality of the street level. Planning and developments of the past affected the public life of the city user. Rules of post-war transformation have reduced the complexity and the connectivity in the center. These aspects resulted into a constant transformation of the ur- ban structure rather than a coherent city form.

10 20 30 40 50 STEDENBOUWKUNDIGE PLAN DROO ZUID

  • 24. NABUURSCHAP HOOGVLIET tuinstad Rotterdam, The Netherlands Office: LvBk,2005, Estrade Commision, realized 2009 The Nabuurschap Tarbotstraat design consists of a small-scale urban module or “stamp” for the garden town of Hoogvliet. Each stamp is a re- peatable unit consisting of about ten one-family houses with individual gardens, grouped around a collective open space. The central garden is ideal for children at play, a community barbecue or a jeu de boules competition. Collective resources such as rainwater and compostable waste are used for watering and fertilizing this green oasis. The entrance area to the cohousing community of the stamp provides space for parking cars and bicycles. The stepped face of each block of three, four or five houses is oriented towards the sun, the gar- dens and the nearby canal. The terraces continue the garden area upwards to create a three-dimen- sional green ensemble – the Hanging Gardens of Hoogvliet.

  • 26. WESTPOLDER DORP Rotterdam, The Netherlands Office: LvBk, 2006, Public Commision, in planning Westpolder Dorp is a design for a new central zone of the housing estate of Westpolder. It consists of some one hundred apartments, a supermarket and other com- mercial functions, and public facilities such as a care centre, a kindergarten and a social services centre. The location is close to a future Randstadrail station. The main theme of the master plan is “village architecture”. The design defines a balance between residence, ame- nities and public space. The functional programme is distributed over six volumes of village-like proportions, which huddle close together with small, intimate open spaces between them. Each of these “houses” contains apartments combined with facilities specific to a village centre. This results in characteristic building shapes with distinct identities: the supply barn, the care yard, the play house, the market hall, the music chapel and the sports gym.
