Congratulations! You received a lovely fresh rose bouquet or a
live rose plant on Mothers Day and you want to enjoy them as
long as possible.

3. Florist Prepped Them
Before you received your roses, the florist prepped them by
removing the thorns, cutting the stems and immersing them in an
antibacterial product, and spraying them with an antidessicant to
keep them from drooping. This type of preparation is crucial to
keeping the flowers fresh until they arrive on your doorstep.

4. Mothers Day Roses
Your Mothers Day roses can last up to 2 weeks and your potted
rose plant, of course, will last for an indeterminate period of time,
with proper care and attention.

If the roses arrived in a florist box, immediately remove them and
prepare a vase with tepid water and the flower food provided. The
key to long-lasting cut flowers is to keep the stems in a state of
constant water intake. Air seals the capillaries and blocks water
flow.

6. Recut The Stems At An Angle
The solution is to recut the stems at an angle, under water. The
reason for cutting the stems at an angle is because if you cut
them straight the stems will simply set on the bottom of the vase
and block the water. After a day or so, remove the roses from the
vase, and re-cut the stems under tepid water. Replace the water
in the vase and add more flower food.

7. Sufficient Water
Roses that arrive in a vase have been prepped by the Mothers
Day florist who designed your bouquet. Check the water level to
see if there is sufficient water. Because dying foliage will cause
your arrangement to fade, check to see if any rose leaves are
underwater. Without completely removing the rose from the
water, as that will allow air to enter the capillaries, lift the rose and
strip the foliage off. If you accidentally life the rose from the water,
recut at an angle and return to the vase.

8. Care of a Potted Rose Plant
A potted rose plant needs special attention because roses do not
grow naturally indoors. Place out of direct sunlight, but in a bright
window receiving at least 6 hours of sun daily. Water as soon as
the soil feels dry, allowing the water to run out the drainage hole.
Do not allow to stand in water after watering. Fertilize your potted
rose following the directions on a house plant fertilizer such as
Miracle Grow.

9. Don't Panic
Don't panic when you receive your Mothers Day roses! Roses are
very resilient and, with a bit of TLC, you will be able to enjoy a
fresh bouquet for 2 weeks, and your potted plant for years.
