8. CASE STUDY
How Americans feel
about privacy in the
digital age
참조 : http://www.slideshare.net/PewInternet/transportation-and-privacy-in-the-mobile-age/download
8
9. A paradox lies at the heart of Americans’ views on privacy
• They cherish it as a right and principle …
– 80%-95% say they think it is very important,
depending on question framing
• … yet they often will act in their daily lives
in ways that allow others to monitor and
track them
– 50%-70% do so in their use of credit cards,
preferred customer cards, online activities
참조 : http://www.slideshare.net/PewInternet/transportation-and-privacy-in-the-mobile-age/download
9
10. Privacy actually means three things to Americans
• Anonymity: In general, they are somewhat
less concerned about that in the networked age.
Tied to interactions with others.
• Confidentiality: They want their data-
minders to give them control over the use of
their personal information. Tied to corporations
and government.
• Security: They want data-minders to protect
them from data breaches and identity theft. Tied
to ways others can cause them harm.

11. Not all information is created equal
• Most protective of …
– Health information
– Financial information
– Children’s information
– Personal and family secrets
• Most everything else is on the table for
negotiation
참조 : http://www.slideshare.net/shyuep/the-materials-api-v1
11
12. Context matters
• More people are willing to forego some privacy if the
monitoring is aimed at fighting things like …
– child predators
– terrorists
– other criminals
– making streets of bad drivers
– to make public places safer
----
• Comparisons of privacy vs. conferred benefits often
see people favoring the benefits

• The more cohesive a social network is the better
information can diffuse through it
• Hence, the more cohesive intrafirm social
networks are the more informed a firm’s
members are (e.g., Reagens & McEvily 2003)
• Under network configurations where
information flows are more likely to be
controlled, information brokering is also
more likely to occur
• Hence, individuals with decision making
power are more likely to drive knowledge
transformation the more central they are in
intrafirm social networks

Hybrid Networks - Connected networks of different contexts; a social and a
business network. Example Hybrid networks, contain 8 people and 12 relations. 8
links are interconnections (local), and 4 links are acting as glue connecting two
networks (foreign). Network contains 48 nodes and 92 edges.

‘ Information Exchange in User Communities:A Study of Individual Level Determinants and Firm Level Effects in the U.S. Snowsports Industry Private Dissertation Defense‘ by Thomas Langenberg, June 14, 2007 에서 인용 . 1.
Considering the resulting ontology-driven trust networks, I divided the networks into two types; Trust networks of small size and larger size. Starting from a network of two people, I increased the Length of the network, by increasing the people And then I increased the width of the network by increasing the number of relations per people, but keeping The same number of people, in order to evaluate the network structure resulting.
I described Hybrid networks, as a set of connected context-dependant (using ContextType property) networks. For instance as I have shown, we have a business network, a set of colleagues and a set of friends on a social network, Connected to each other on this hybrid network, the structure of resulting network is shown in picture. This network contains 8 people and 12 relations, and resulting trust network contains 48 nodes and 92 edges.
In real world scenarios, we have a combination of networks of different contexts, different sizes of course. A meshed network reflects the structure of a real-world network. This network contains 16 people and 26 relations. And resulting trust Network contains 98 nodes and 198 edges.
