- 2. Objective • By the end of the lesson, SWBAT examine and describe the culture of the 1920s.
- 3. 1920s • World War I ended, what was Europe like after the war ended?
- 4. Europe after WWI • It was destroyed, a good chunk of the population had died in the horrible war! • Cities needed to be rebuilt!
- 6. America After World War I • What was America like after World War I?
- 7. America After WWI • The U.S. was not destroyed because no fighting in WWI took place in America. • Not as much of the population died in the war because America wasn’t in the war that long. • America was becoming richer because it had to help rebuild Europe - this made factories very busy!
- 9. The Roaring Twenties! • Because America became one of the world’s super powers and much richer after World War I, the 1920s was a time of economic growth in the U.S.
- 10. The Roaring Twenties • Not only did America become richer, but culture in America changed a lot after World War I. • This time period is known as the Roaring Twenties! • Roaring Twenties - A period in the 1920s when the social, musical, and artistic culture took off and changed America.
- 11. Vocabulary • So, in order to talk about the Roaring Twenties, we need to talk about culture. • What is culture?
- 12. Culture • Culture is what surrounds people. It includes a community’s language, religion, popular music, literature, and movies.

- 15. The Roaring Twenties • The Roaring Twenties was a time of cultural change!
- 16. Social Culture • Many women started to break away from old fashioned rules about what women should be like. • They started wearing different clothing, being more independent, and speaking up for themselves. • Some of these women were known as Flappers

- 18. Social Culture • Other women started demanding more rights such as the right to vote! • The 19th Amendment gave women the right to vote.

Economic Culture • America became wealthy after World War I because it was one of the only developed countries in the world that wasn’t destroyed by the war. • The U.S. was also rich because of all the inventions developed. • Therefore, a lot of people became wealthier and started building mansions and sky scrapers!

- 22. Artistic Culture • Many people started experimenting with different types of art forms in the 1920s. It was an explosion of new ideas! • Also, new music came on the scene that was much different.

Harlem Renaissance • African Americans from all over the country started to move to Harlem, New York, to celebrate their heritage. • In Harlem, people wrote poetry and stories, developed music, and painted all in an attempt to show how unfairly African Americans were being treated and to bring pride to the African American community.
- 26. Conclusion • Culture is everything that surrounds us. • It evolves over time • Culture in the 1920s was very strong! • The Harlem Renaissance helped start the Civil Rights movement for African Americans.
