9. • A region is an area with definable
characteristics, but not always fixed
boundaries. In other words, an area with
similar, or common, characteristics.
Remember there are two types of
boundaries—formal and functional.
Formal boundaries would be “fixed”, but
functional boundaries aren’t necessarily
“fixed.”

10. • A region can be defined by natural or
artificial features—mountains, rivers,
deserts, language, religion, government,
etc.

11. • A famous geographer, Carl Saur, coined a
term called a “Cultural Landscape” that is
the natural area plus culture (or human
interaction). A cultural landscape is a
region.
