6. How do we meld a school that has
great traditions with the
innovations in education that seem
to be coming into fruition all
around us?
7. Do we throw the
baby out with the
bath water?
We’re looking for balance between the
things that are innovative that make
students successful learners and those
traditions that do the same.
13. Name the innovation
Thomas Edison
predicted that, thanks
to this innovation,
“books will soon be
obsolete in schools.”
14.
15. Name the innovation
New York City’s Board of Education
was actually the first organization
to send lessons to schools via
device. Over the next couple of
decades, millions of American
students experienced lessons from
it.
24. A (mostly) rhetorical question
Does it mean that something needs to get crossed off
the traditional list in order to make room for innovation?
Additionally, (still rhetorical?)
✴Does innovation exist to make our lives easier?
28. What does innovation mean?
Innovation is the creation of better or more effective
products, processes, services, technology or ideas that are
accepted by markets, governments and society. Innovation
differs from invention in that innovation refers to the use of
a new idea or method, whereas invention refers more
directly to the creation of the idea or method itself.

31. What do we value?
The Bryn Mawr School is an independent, nonsectarian, college-preparatory school for girls from preschool through grade twelve.
Within a nurturing environment, Bryn Mawr's rigorous academic curriculum inspires a passion for intellectual curiosity and
emphasizes the delights and demands of learning. In the classical humanistic tradition, Bryn Mawr promotes the full
development of mind, body, and spirit. The school cultivates respect for diversity and engenders habits of moral and ethical
leadership and a sense of responsibility to the broader community.
A Bryn Mawr education is grounded in the expectation that young women will be resilient in the face of complexity, ambiguity, and
change; will become responsible and confident participants in the world; and, will lead considered and consequential lives.
32. How do we use our new tool to do those
things we value?

Think about all the things that used to be so innovative and we used to use on a regular basis: white out, floppy disks, a payphone. We really don’t have a need for those things too much anymore. this is because newer tools have come to take their place. New tools are consistantly being made available to make these former inventions useless.\n\n

We’re looking for balance between the things that are innovative that make students successful learners and those traditions that do the same.\n\n
Create a list as a large group—“traditional” things in the classroom. For example, cursive. We all have memories of cursive—but it’s something that is being eliminated from some curriculums or is debated as “old-fashioned” This is not a list of necessarily things we don’t like, even though we may have opinions on it now, we’re just looking at tradition.\n\nOther ideas: pencil/paper, multiplication tables, literary canon, five paragraph essay, desks in rows, memorization of state capitals, paper dictionaries, textbooks, lecture, teacher-centered classroom, pull down maps, homework, set schedule, spelling, planners, research papers, character education, report cards/grades, school day (8:00-3:30)\n\n\n

If you think we should keep it and it’s important then you dig it, if you think that’s it we’re done, we’ll ditch it. We’ll ask some people to defend, then perhaps re-vote if people are interested. These votes are not binding, it will not change anything at BMS!\n\n
(rhetorical? Whole group?) Does it mean that something needs to get crossed off the traditional list in order to make room for innovation? Does innovation exist to make our lives easier?\n\n

(quick share with a small group)\nEXAMPLES:\n-innovation doesn’t mean what we’re doing up until now is wrong, things have just changed. \n-Anything is innovative: if it doesn’t work, is it still innovative? Innovation doesn’t have to be positive, it’s just trying to change\n-There has to be a benefit to society\n-Innovative can enhance and help if we use it correctly\n\nClick: Definitions\nInvention is the creation\nInnovation is what we do with the creation\nThe tool itself is not innovative until we make it so\n(and please know my definition of tool doesn’t mean technological—think about the Cyborgs video, a tool is an extension of self to allow us to do something better!)\n\n\n

What do we value as a school? (list)\n- Create, collaborate, communicate, higher-order thinking\n\n
How are we using/can we use the new opportunities (tools) to do the things we value (both our mission and the traditions we value)?\n-social media\n-crowd sourcing/sharing notes\n-skyping with other places\n-flipped classroom\n-project-based learning\n\n
I didn’t intend to solve any big picture questions, but an opportunity for us to do something we rarely get to do . . .talk.\n\nIdeally, we’d like to stop thinking this, and just be there. Knowing the options to make the choices to fit the objective. (8th grade example of sitting around the front of the room)\n\nWhere do we go from here? What are three things you’re thinking about with this new technology in your hands? (for department meetings)\n\n
