Nationalism can be either destructive or creative. Destructive nationalism can make anger and hatred erupt between nations as they compete with each other for the world’s resources, wealth, and power.
IMPERIALISM- The control by one country of the political and economic life of another country or region. The late 1800’s are called the Age of Imperialism, but European nations had a long tradition of colonizing other parts of the world. They began colonizing the Americas in the 1500s. By 1900, most of the colonies in America had gained their independence. Belgium, France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, and Great Britain concentrated their efforts on managing colonies in Africa, Southeast Asia, and the South Pacific. In time, struggles between these colonial powers would bring disaster to Europe.
MILITARISM-the massive build-up of military force. The major nations of Europe engaged in militarism prior to WWI. National security was placed in the strength of one’s armies and navies. It was considered dangerous to let other countries surpass you in terms of weapons and military capability.EXAMPLESGreat Britain’s policy was to maintain a more effective navy than any two countries combined. Germany increased the size of its navy to compete with Great Britain
What Set It Off?The background:The Serbians were angry with the Austria-Hungary for annexing Bosnia (even though it belonged to the Ottoman Empire). The Austro-Hungarians worried about the Serbs potentially uniting all the Slavs in southeastern Europe, which could threaten the Hungarian part of their empire. Russia was mad at Austria-Hungary too. The Russians saw that part of Europe, the Balkans, as their sphere of influence – especially Slavic Serbia
On Sunday, June 28, 1914, amidst all the turmoil going on between Serbia and the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, and his wife were assassinated by a Serbian Nationalist while visiting Sarajevo, Bosnia. On August 12, 1914, Austro-Hungary invades Serbia to start the Great War!
The Alliances go to Work!Russia came to the aid of Serbia by mobilizing troops. Germany then declared war on Russia and its ally France.France declared war on Germany.Germany cut through Belgium (neutral) on the way to attack the French. This gave Great Britain incentive to enter the war to help Belgium and France.
World War I took to the skies as airplanes dropped bombs and fought the first ever air to air battles. World War I brought about submarine warfare. German U-Boats sank enemy warships and neutralized transports without warning. Troops moved by trucks and armored personnel carriers and through trenches. Guns were bigger, faster-firing, longer-range, and more numerous than those of any war before. And now there were so-called advances such as crippling mustard gas. Modern chemical warfare had arrived.

On one hand the United States is a country of immigrants (from both sides) so they wanted to stay out of the conflict On the other hand, the US was profiting from the needs of the war. Factories were booming, making supplies to be sold to countries involved.TWO EVENTS OCCURRED THAT MADE AMERICA JOIN THE WARThe sinking of the Lusitania by a German U-Boat (Two Torpedoes)From New York to Liverpool – German U-Boats stalked British watersCargo consisted of munitions and contraband destined for the British war effort 114 Americans diedThe Zimmerman Note: A secret note was intercepted that was being sent to Mexico from German officials. The sinking of the Lusitania and the Zimmerman Telegram made the U.S. entering the Great War inevitable. On April 6, 1917, the U.S. joined its allies--Britain, France, and Russia--to fight in World War IThe US decided it cannot allow Germany and the Central Powers to defeat the Allies. The U.S. coming in to the war saved the ALLIES. Why?Everyone was running out of men, supplies, food...When the U. S. came in - new men, supplies, food, etc. was added to the Allied ForcesGermany and the Central Powers were strugglingLoss of men, supplies and food depleted.
The final Allied push towards the German border began on October 17, 1918. As the British, French and American armies advanced, the alliance between the Central Powers began to collapse. Turkey (the Ottoman Empire) signed an armistice (truce) at the end of October, Austria-Hungary followed on November 3. Germany began to crumble from within. On November 9 the Kaiser (German Emperor) abdicated (stepped down); slipping across the border into the Netherlands and exile. A German Republic was declared and peace feelers extended to the Allies. At 5 AM on the morning of November 11 an armistice was signed in a railroad car parked in a French forest near the front lines. The terms of the agreement called for the cessation of fighting along the entire Western Front to begin at precisely 11 AM that morning. After over four years of bloody conflict, the Great War was at an end.
Although the armistice signed on November 11, 1918 put an end to the actual fighting, it took six months of negotiations at the Paris Peace Conference to conclude a peace treaty.
The Treaty of Versailles was a peace treaty that officially ended World War I. It was signed on June 28, 1919, exactly 5 years after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, one of the events that triggered the start of the war. - Germany was forced to sign the treaty
