Building Environmental Awareness  “Once it gets measured, it gets done!”  Chris Blencowe, Bursar of Pembroke College Installing an effective monitoring system Informing decision-making with the data Locate waste of resource Creating a low-carbon community
The monitoring system Locate processes with high energy consumption => Apply reusable current clamps to track the sources of high energy usage Technological origin => technological solution Behavioural origin => build environmental awareness Continuously control critical processes => Install stationary metering i.e. air-conditioning etc. College Administration Accommodation

Environmental awareness campaign Spread the word!Pembroke is a ‘Green college’ => Attract “Sustainable” students Set up monitors in each building showing energy consumption Personalised feedback to staff and students
A low carbon community “Green is cool” Enhancing current students and staff commitments Organise a “Green race” Attract sponsors Regular meeting of the “Green club”
Greening the Heat - Research Listed buildings! Gas = 6067 Mwh/yr Gas = 54% CO2 emissions For buildings and per person, gas is by far the largest consumed utility. At peak, 6/7 gas used for heating, 1/7 hot water Meet the English Heritage/CIBSE 4 aims for sustainable historic buildings.
Heat – what can be done? College provided branded blankets/sweaters Foil behind radiators Phase change materials Tri-Iso or vacuum  thin room insulations Additional insulation of heat distribution and storage Thermal imaging/surveys Heat Technologies Heat recovery systems Solar thermal Air source heat pumps Geothermal heat pumps CHP Radiant technologies
Geothermal Heat Pump 5kw/bore hole @ ÂŁ5k One hole every 10m up to 100m deep 53 holes = 265kw @ ÂŁ265k (1/4 load) Darwin College & Architecture have systems Water may not be hot enough for purpose Electricity needed for pumps
Inverter Combined Heat and Power  Replace 1 boiler with 2 inverter-based 100kw CHPs that produce 250kw heat each @ ÂŁ50k/engine (1/2 load) Peak electric use = 200kw+ = peak CHP production Modulate heat production based on use according to demand Possibility of excess electricity if use continues to decrease- ESCo opportunity? Gas dependence for life of boiler (~25 yrs)
New Radiant Technologies 90% efficiency for electric heating ‘Warm edge’ secondary double glazing Room temperature typically 2° cooler, or 12% reduction of power Single room controls Electricity dependent
