Immigrants arrived in American cities in large numbers from the 1870s through the 1920s, providing much of the population growth as the country became more urbanized and industrialized. They mostly settled in ethnic neighborhoods within cities where jobs were available, although they had been farmers in their home countries. However, their arrival led native-born Americans to fear that traditional American culture and society would fade away in favor of European styles, causing tensions between the groups.

From the 1870s through out the 1920s America was
becoming a big agrarian society into an urban one.
The growth for industry laid the foundation for many of
the big cities.
Millions of immigrants arrived in the big cities providing
much of the cities population.
The immigrants were mostly farmers but tended to stay
in the cities where they built ethnic neighborhoods where
there were jobs for them to inquire.
The native born people from America become pretty
scared that America will fade away and become more
accustomed to European style of life which caused fumes
between the American people and the immigrants.
