5. The Dunning-Kruger Effect
UK Judge Conference. 6/12/2014
Definition:
Wikipedia: - The Dunning–Kruger effect is a cognitive bias
wherein unskilled individuals suffer from illusory superiority,
mistakenly rating their ability much higher than is accurate.
What this means:
We often think we are better than we really are!
6. The Dunning-Kruger Effect
UK Judge Conference. 6/12/2014
Effect of the MTG Colour Pie Exercise 1:
For the skill we are trying to perform for the first time (self
evaluation), we have likely failed to recognize that we are not very
good at it: The three dominant traits we have chosen are most likely
incorrect.
Effect of the MTG Colour Pie Exercise 2:
For me (running a meaningful exercise), I will likely fail to recognize
genuine skill: I will not be able to recognize who were actually correct
in their self evaluation!
Effect of the MTG Colour Pie Exercise 3:
The Dunning Kruger effect states in some cases, we don’t even
know the extremities of our inadequacy: we don’t know just how bad
we are at this!
7. Conclusion
UK Judge Conference. 6/12/2014
The MTG Colour Pie was an exercise in showing us
how far from the mark we are when trying to do self
evaluation and self improvement.
Value of the exercise:
Probably zero or worse!

rewarded.
