Mr. Klaber’s Shakira Grid Drawing (animation)
What is a Grid Drawing?
• A drawing that utilizes a grid to simplify
the proportions and shapes of a desired
  photo.
Why Grid?

• It’s easy to
  learn and helps
  train the eye in
  the matter of
  proportion.
• Describes the size,
  location or amount of
  one element to
  another (or to the
  whole) in a work.
POP QUIZ!
When comparing these two pictures, name two
things on the left that are out of proportion?

Neck and Hair Nose and Forehead
Yes. The nose
  and forehead
are WAY OFF!
 Time to go to
 the next slide.
Nope. Those
are fine. It’s the
   nose and
 forehead that
are WAY OFF!
Famous Grid Artist: Chuck Close

                 • Photo-Realist
                   Painter
                 • Life was filled
                   with tragedy at a
                   young age
                 • Confined in
                   wheelchair
Chuck Close: Gridding Process

• Starts with
  gridded photo
• Transfers scaled
  grid onto canvas
• He always starts
  in a corner of the
  canvas

How to Grid Draw:
How to Grid Draw (Recap):

• Find your photo
  and make sure
  it’s at least 8 or
  more inches on
  each side (width
  and height)
How to Grid Draw (Recap):
• Make 1 inch by 1
  inch squares all
  over your photo
  so it looks like
  this:
How to Grid Draw (Recap):
• Grid your
  drawing paper 2
  inches by 2
  inches and in the
  same dimension
  as the photo so it
  looks like this:
Breaking it Down:
• When you are working on one individual
grid, it helps to break it down further to see
where lines intersect and where details
  should go:
• There are two different
  methods of grid drawing:
 –Grid at a Time
 –Outline Drawing
Example of a Grid at a Time:
• Solely focus on
  one square at a
  time drawing,
  shading
  everything
  perfectly before
  moving on to the
  next one.
Example of a Outline Drawing:

• Solely focus on
  getting the
  major lines and
  details first.
  Then going back
  and completing
  the shading.
Example of a Outline Drawing:

• Solely focus on
  getting the
  major lines and
  details first.
  Then going back
  and completing
  the shading.
Grid Drawing Objectives:

• Student will
  understand the
  concept of drawing
  with a grid.
• Student will utilize
  the elements of art
  to create a
  realistic drawing in
  black and white.

Dani & Cristy by Dani Grimes, 2010
Grid Drawing Objectives:
• Students will learn
  about proportion
  and utilize this
  knowledge in their
  drawings.
• Student will create
  work that
  demonstrates
  shape, volume,
  depth, proportion,
  and dimension
