1. The 15th century church of St John the Baptista was
built by King Emanuel I and stands in Tomar’s main
square, Praça da República, and was rebuilt on 16th
century.
It is distinguished by its amazing Manueline portal
and octagonal spire, inside there is a carved stone
pulpit and 16th century paintings, which include a
Last Supper by Gregório Lopes (1490-1550) and a
particularly gruesome beheading of John the
Baptist (also attributed to Gregório Lopes).
These fantastic features are an optimal excuse to
visit our church!
