2. HISTORY
 In 1405, Cristine de Pizan wrote in her book ‘The Book of
the City of Ladies’ that the oppression of women is founded
on irrational prejudice.
 The movement towards gender equality in western countries
began with the Suffragette movement of the late 19th
century, which sought to allow women to vote and hold
elected office.
 During the Second World War, the general departure of able
bodied men for war required women to take up “male” roles
on a large scale, leading to a major shift towards equality of
women.
